New “Geo-Tagging” Feature

Post by Rekha V »

At SPAR Europe 2012 in The Hague, Leica Geosystems announced breakthrough features in Leica Cyclone and Leica TruView software that promise to extend the benefits of laser scanning into new markets, including daily plant operations, maintenance, and inspection activities.

A “Geo-Tagging” feature, plus other new features allow HotLinks in Leica TruView to be created more efficiently and enable Leica TruView to be more easily integrated into other software. These advances enable rich laser scans to be used in new ways and markets. During SPAR Europe 2012, Intergraph will demonstrate the first full-scale implementation of Leica TruView integration into their SmartPlant® Enterprise for Owner Operators and SmartPlant® Foundation products.

Key, new features provide better way to associate object data with rich laser scan images
Many people have wanted to use rich scan images to connect to information about objects that they see in the images. Previous methods of doing this included (a) converting point clouds into fully intelligent models or (b) hyperlinking a Leica TruView to a URL. However, both methods were labor intensive and modeling required specialist skills.

The inherent appeal of using Leica TruView to connect to object information is its extraordinarily intuitive interface. First introduced in 2006, free, internet-based Leica TruView software is similar to Google’s StreetView, but is used for viewing sites and facilities that have been laser scanned. In addition to intuitively viewing panoramic laser scan and photo-realistic images, Leica TruView users can also easily measure within its images, pan & zoom, create mark-ups, and even link points within its images to other information.

Now, Leica Cyclone 8.0 and TruView 3.0 have broken the barriers of efficiency and complexity, promising to significantly expand the use of laser scanning. Key new capabilities include:
  • - “Geo-Tagging” – a way to associate data with a scanned object that is much faster than adding object intelligence via modeling
    - Automatic publishing of HotLinks for TruViews - users can now instantly populate all Leica TruViews that contain specific HotLinks
    - A new API for Leica TruView enables qualified 3rd party software developers to integrate Leica TruView into their software
    - Bi-directional integration with 3rd party software allows all TruViews associated with an object to be identified and allows TruView to become an additional, intuitive user interface into 3rd party software
First major integration of Leica TruView into other software
Taking advantage of the above new features in Leica Cyclone 8.0 and Leica TruView, Intergraph PPM has deeply integrated Leica TruView as a photo-realistic plant browser connected directly to intelligent plant information in SmartPlant® Enterprise for Owner Operators and SmartPlant® Foundation. With this new capability, any plant staff – on the plant floor, in remote locations without internet connectivity, or in the back office – can use TruView to access the right plant data and documentation much more quickly and easily than using traditional means. Users also enjoy the safety and “real world accuracy” benefits of TruView’s underlying laser scan data.

Developments like this will expand the benefits of laser scanning for the plant market from its traditional use as accurate as-built information for capital projects to important new uses in daily plant operations and maintenance.
