Hi Dan,

Both Viewer and the POD creator worked very well. However we saw that POD creator cannot read the range filter of zfs files. Is there any other settings in the POD Creator, that we need to know?

Hi Bora,

Unfortunately this hasn't been included. I will put it to the developers and see if it can be added.

In what respect?

SS3 has been out for quite a while now. It has pretty good point cloud tools and commands in it.
I would expect SS4 not to be that far away most likely with even further enhancements to it's range of point cloud tools.

Well I am not very familiar with Bentley software. :)
As far as I understand, the current Descartes version works as additional package for Microstation.
But in the beginning of this year new version on Descartes going to be released - stand-alone, working absolutely independently with some 3d modelling capabilities.

Hi,
Tx for your interest.

Massimo is right Bentley Descartes has been available only as a layered application able to extend MicroStation and other Bentley design applications (Inroad, OpenPlant, AECOSIM Building Designer, Substation…) and we are now introducing additionally a standalone version.
So starting with Descartes V8i SS4 , Descartes will be available in 2 versions: the layered and the standalone.
This Standalone version embeds all MicroStation, all Descartes and Clash detection capabilities.
The standalone version of Descartes SS4 is currently available as a beta to all Bentley select user. We also have a dedicated Bentley community running.
http://communities.bentley.com/products ... fault.aspx

We expect to release it before the end of the quarter.

In terms of features here a non-exhaustive list:
• Numerous ways to display point clouds (extended in SS4 with capability to combine shaders, to create and manage custom classes )
• Deliverable creation
– Tiling\Cutting files (Tile Export works with any polygon or 3D slab)
– Point Cloud clean-up & Classification Editing (extended in SS4)
– Animation and Rendering
• Large set of tools to extract geometries & features
– Smart Snap (snap in real time on key points)& Visual Explorer
– Snap\Drape Element
– Cylinder and plane extraction
– Clip and Section manager (New in SS4 – sections can be made in 2 clicks and will configure view as well as ACS automatically)
– 3D Line Following (New in SS4 – extract road paintlines , wires and more..)
– Model by Section (New in SS4 , extract road breaklines and complex structures: bridges, tunnels..)
Below is an illustration of our Model by Section tool applied to a tunnel. The process is to fit a template of the tunnel in different sections (sectioning and fitting are assisted to reduce the number of clicks and the loft surface is generated automatically).

I invite people with some MicroStation background to give a try to the beta which is very stable.
I am currently travelling and have limited internet access but I should be able to put some more interesting videos showing the product in action in the coming days.

Thanks again for your interest, I hope this answer helps.

I see that Pointools View (free) has been updated since 2013. I'm not sure what file formats it will import.
Youtube tutorial from Sept. 2017 that look interesting:

With Bentley Pointools View, you can:
Quickly view and examine very large point-cloud datasets
Accurately measure distances between points
Rapidly attach notes to points or models
Easily produce orthographic and perspective images
