CyArk has launched its first Kickstarter project for the 3D digital preservation of a National Treasure: the 1964-65 World's Fair NY State Pavilion.

The World's Fair Pavilion is a significant site at risk and by partnering with the University of Central Florida's Institute for Simulation and Training, we will be able to digitally preserve the site for only $15,000. But we need your help in reaching this goal by May 31st.
We have already been granted site access permissions from NY City Department of Parks and Recreation. Now we are calling on members of the public to help underwrite the cost of sending UCF professors and staff into the field to document the structures. We have a goal of $15,000 to cover basic costs of field work and initial data processing. The resulting data will also be made available to the public via our website in full resolution registered point cloud format; and if enough funds are raised, eventually 3D models for your own 3D printing, etc.
The NY State Pavilion's Tent of Tomorrow and Astro-Towers embodied a fantastical vision of the future. Sadly, the Pavilion has lost much of its former grandeur over the years. The colorful fiberglass panels from the Tent of Tomorrow were removed in the 1970's and time and weather have contributed to further deterioration. Debate now surrounds the future of the pavilion, whether it will be restored and reused (at an estimated cost of $40m-70m), or whether it will be demolished (at a cost of $14m). The importance of the site is validated by its inclusion on the World Monuments Fund Watch List and its recent status as a National Treasure by the National Trust for Historic Preservation in honor of its 50th anniversary.
The data we capture will serve as a permanent archive of the structures and can be used in any future restoration efforts should physical preservation go forward.
Help us and pledge your support for our Kickstarter! And share it with friends and family. Thank you!

I drove past the site a few weeks back on a trip to NY and was surprised to see how bad it looks now. It would be really great if they do decide to restore it, although it does seem very expensive.
Good luck with your funding for this.

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery! I am currently in the works of putting together a similar campaign to document a site in Illinois that will hopefully eventually give our state a presence in the CyArk 500! There is a huge gap in their world map for the Midwestern region of the USA. Any suggestions on sites to pursue? The only site currently listed as a "world heritage" site is Cahokia Mounds. If CyArk members (nod to Justin) happen to continue with reading this comment, are sites not on the world heritage list ever considered for the 500 if there is significant documentation to offer for its eligibility?

Hello Mr. Hohimer,
Yes, we do consider many sites of varying 'importance' (local, national, international). Please feel free to reach out to me justin.barton[at]cyark.org and we can discuss your local sites further. We actually have an entire CyArk 500 nomination process as well that you'd be welcomed to follow ( http://archive.cyark.org/submit-site )
But we can chat about that further!
