New CyArk 500 Projects Launched

Post by Justin Barton »

I thought perhaps it might be of interest if I provide a short update regarding our projects as they're launched (ie, made public) on our website.

For starters...

June 9, 2009 we launched the Stone Bridge of Regensburg - A Masterpiece of Medieval Engineering project:

And on June 25, 2009 we launched the Monte Alban, Mexico - Capital of the Zapotec Empire project:

I hope people find this interesting! Also, feel free to follow us on Twitter http://twitter.com/cyark for regular updates or create a free account and join our mailing list to receive our new monthly Newsletter which will also update you on newly released or upcoming projects (Vol 1, Issue 1 was just published June 27 and a second issue is due at the end of July). If people are interested, I will continue to add replies with new project info to this thread.

Cheers,
Justin

On July 27th, CyArk launched the Carmelite Church of Weissenburg: http://archive.cyark.org/launch-of-the- ... nburg-blog. Our first Carmelite structure!

On July 30th, CyArk was exceptionally proud to introduce its 25th project, Rapa Nui, or more commonly known as Easter Island! Read a little about our history in our 25th Project celebratory blog:

(And if you read the blog and follow the directions at the bottom, you can get a celebratory 25th project button!)

Hello everyone,

I am please to (very belatedly) announce the launch of our latest project: The Royal Tombs at Kasubi

In February of 2009, a joint effort between Provide Solutions, LLC and Plowman Craven brought Mr. Scott Cedarleaf to Kampala, Uganda. There, he conducted a Digital Preservation project at the UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Tombs of the Bugandan Kings at Kasubi. The project was made live on the CyArk archive on August 13th and was announced in our August newsletter. We are excited to have our first sub-Saharan project and look forward to working in the remarkable region more in the future.

They look like very interesting projects. I noticed that you are using a 4500 scanner for these projects, and wondered what the quality of data is generally like?

Hi Matt!

A 4500 was one of two scanners used for the Carmelite Church of Weissenburg project, but actually we use a variety of scanners. This is because CyArk does not actually own a scanner, but rather we help facilitate the partnerships between heritage professionals and service providers. We have data from pretty much all of Leica's equipment, including the ol'Cyrax 2500 (minus the new C10, of course!). The data from the 4500 is definitely good, but the newer versions like the HDS6000 are considerably better for speed, range, and temperament of the equipment. Luckily, though, Leica equipment always has a very low noise level.

Justin,

Its good to know that all the scanners get a chance, and interesting to know that you use the Cyrax 2500 from time to time. I used the 2500 when I first got into scanning and apart from the weight and being a bit prone to breaking down now and again, it was a great scanner. I hope that you get the chance to use a C10 some time, its really amazing.
