I'd say it is cleverer to buy the PC for the specific workload intended. If the donkey work you're planning for a 2nd PC doesn't need a high end GPU, spending money on one is pointless. Very easy to add later if the need arises. Crypto mining has put a premium on GPUs that makes them a poor investment unless they're actually going to be used. A lot of secondary workstations in scanning and processing will be doing import, export, publishing and batch processing that mostly benefits from a decent CPU and big, fast, storage. Easy to add the GPU later when the need arises or you spot a bargain.

Nvidia makes sense if you've a CUDA workload but AMD can be cheaper if not

Lieven mentioned that he might be interested in running our software on it, so I was simply commenting on that. And to be honest, NVIDIA doesn't necessarily mean high-end. There are a lot of affordable options out there. Some of our demo laptops have GeForce GTX 1060 on them and they work perfectly well for a lot of our use cases.

My bad, didn't notice the nubigon reference in Lieven's post. Looking at it again, what would you recommend as minimum reasonable spec for rendering video in nubigon? e.g. does it benefit from GPU only, how much GPU memory, multiple CPU threads or fast single thread etc...

Our spec requirements are quite modest. Any graphics card at the caliber of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 and above will do a decent job. More on this is available here https://help.nubigon.com/knowledge-base ... uirements/ The VRAM usage for rendering can be freely set by the user.
