Useful software besides scanning

Post by landmeterbeuckx »

Hi,

In https://laserscanningforum.com/forum/vi ... =69&t=9422 this thread there is a mention of free screencasting software which looks great.

Maybe it would be nice to start a thread of software everyone uses for general purpose (paid or freeware). I have no interest or am connected to these softwares.

I'll start with this one

Bulk rename utility : endless possibilities for renaming and redating files.
Anydesk : remote access of computers, use this in teh field and even in office to launch tasks at other pc's.
Techsmith Snagit and Camtasia : powerful screencasting and printscreen possibilities
Geosetter : georeferencing software for pictures
Evernote : all digital filing
Total Commander : my favorite file explorer
Vice Versa : file synchronization software
Treesize : display files sizes of hard drives.
...

Let's add some others.

We use Filmora 9 (paid subscription) for recording screen captured training videos/voiceovers, as well as normal media editing for producing flythroughs.

I don't think it has a live streaming ability though.

FastStone Photo Resizer for rather unsurprisingly, resizing photos.

RemotePC for remote access to office and server.

WeTransfer, but possibly moving to pCloud for file transfers.

Thanks for the suggestions, i just tried Bulk Rename Utility, holy crow!

One I like to use for my Powerpoints is 'Screen to Gif' https://www.screentogif.com/
sometimes for that 3-15 sec visual, a gif is great. It will record either a screen, application, or user defined window (<-THIS), allow for some simple editing, and save as a GIF.

Sometimes my company blocks shortened links (tinyurl, bit.ly, goo.gl, is.gd, t.co) , so I use http://www.getlinkinfo.com/ to check them before I open the actual URL.

Bulk rename utility is very powerful. If you're not sure copy some files to a testdirectory before hitting the button.

Will check the other ones out

BACKBLAZE

for backing up your PC to the cloud.
In the version for single pc, with 60 euro / year, you can make a copy of the fille of all its physical HD (NO network hits ..) .. with unlimited space!
I use it to have a copy of all the recording workstation files (about 20 tb).
It is not really a backup service (.. that is separate and costs .. depending on the space occupied). If you delete the files from the PC .. they are also deleted in the cloud .. but with a small surcharge they are kept for 1 year from the local deletion.

Here's a selection of mostly free stuff I use regularly outside of those already mentioned

Notepad++ for an excellent text editor https://notepad-plus-plus.org/downloads/ (free)
Large text file viewer, which does what it says on the tin http://swiftgear.com/ltfviewer/features.html (free)
Irfanview for opening up those bitmaps too big for windows bitmap editor https://www.irfanview.com/64bit.htm (free)
7-Zip for opening all the various compressed archive formats https://www.7-zip.org/download.html (free)
Anaconda, because everyone needs a pet Python https://www.anaconda.com/products/individual (Individual version is free)
Acronis True Image for cloud backups and disk cloning https://www.acronis.com/en-eu/personal/computer-backup/
AJCBackup for doing automated version control of files (not suitable for huge files!) https://www.ajcsoft.com/active-backup.htm
WinMerge file comparison https://winmerge.org/?lang=en (free)
XMLCopy editor for digging into XML files https://xml-copy-editor.sourceforge.io/ (free)

Of those already listed, I also use FileZilla and Camtasia very regularly.
