Brexit without politics

Post by MajorDomo »

Right, Brexit without politics, these are genuine questions that I believe many of us have.
politics aside, genuine contributions only, please.

Some of us do cross border jobs all the time between the continent and GB.
Some even buy gear from the other side.

The questions are simple:
  • How do you proceed if you have gear, and staff the other side of the border when the probable separation kicks in? Recall it before the date, and go trough a temp importation? so you know if there is any guuidelines for this?
  • How do you deal with overseas VAT, as any transition is likely not to line-up with EOFY on both sides?
  • If you are caught in the middle of a project what is your plan. Finish it, or end your involvement there and then?

I know people who work for a UK based company but have long term contracts in europe, which means spending the week in Europe and then fly home for the weekend. I recall them discussing it and worrying about the costs increasing to send people over and getting visas etc. I will catch up and get their thoughts and come back.

Technically I'd agree with you. Pragmatically, I reckon it will be a total shambles starting out and doing business will become more expensive, businesses across the EU and UK will kick up such a stink that the larger part of the crap will become automated and low cost. The thoughts of folders full of useless yellow carnets is enough to get anyone agitated. Same goes for visas, most UK surveying, engineering and construction firms I work with have a substantial contingent of EU staff and would face serious difficulty if they couldn't keep them or continue to hire from the EU where skilled staff weren't available locally. Writing this from Dublin, I'm of the opinion that this is as big a problem for the EU as the UK and cynically reckon it would be best sorted without having politicians too involved.

Hypothetical situation that will happen for sure:

John is a good boy and sends his scanner to be calibrated.
This is 8 weeks to Brexit day.
It's supposed to take 6 weeks, so no problem there.
Due to a mix of staff holidays and lack of unicorn dust, it takes 9 weeks to complete the calibration.

Will the scanner be allowed across the border?
Will John have to pay duties on it?
Will John become a smuggler, start wearing an eye patch, and procure a parrot?

I know what your trying to say but Brexit is politics right now. There is no escaping politics if you mention it.

To answer the question: what do I do and what will happen?

It hasn't happened yet, no one knows what will happen afterwards. Our sun will die out before we really understand why!

It's annoying, unfair, deceitful, confusing and insane, but that's it right now.

One thing I can say with some degree of confidence is that it's probably all about money. If you are doing something that ultimately generates money for the UK economy then I expect you will come out ok in the end... by ok, I mean ok but not alright.
If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.
