Good morning all from Downunder!
Not sure if anyone has been following the news that the above "road" in Harlech - North Wales, has been declared the world's steepest street by the Guiness Book of Records. The record was previously held by Baldwin Street in Dunedin, New Zealand.
The reassigning of the record has created national news here in NZ and there are a few Surveyors here who would like to undertake ratification of the measurements undertaken by the Council surveyors in Harlech and are willing to undertake an analysis of both road's gradients for a fair and equitable comparison. Note that Fford Pen Lech has a few horizontal curves in it whilst Baldwin St is a straight road.
So, I believe we have a data capture process being undertaken in NZ with a Leica RTC 360, wondering if there is anyone local in North Wales who would like to participate and scan Fford Pen Lech in the same manner from which we could then run a fair analysis??
Seen as a way to highlight the capabilities of the data capture industry utilising cutting edge technology.
If anybody is keen to participate let me know, and we can liaise!
Cheers

Re: Fford Pen Lech - Harlech
I will be in Harlech next week, but I won't be able to take a scanner with me. I do remember driving up Fford Pen Lech with my brother a couple of years ago in a new car. The clutch started burning half way up! And we had to go back down again.
I have never visited the street in NZ, but I can tell you that Fford Pen Lech is pretty steep.
I did wonder at the picture in the news report of an old guy with a measuring wheel... I agree that it needs something more cutting edge to be sure.
BTW - having visited San Francisco a couple of times, I would say it has far steeper hills.

If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

Oh the Irony ... a Leica RTC 360 being used to show how far that something is "out of Level"
Mike.
