I am curious to know what the first commercially available terrestrial laser scanner was and when it was released for sale.

Re: First commercially available terrestrial laser scanner
Around 1997 (that's when I first used a Riegl LMS-Z210)

The company who was first on the market cannot be determined exactly. RIEGL (Austria) and CYRAX (USA) were certainly two pioneers in the field of terrestrial Laser Scanning.
1st generation (from 1997): The instruments are bulky, look like prototypes and the data storage and the power supply were external. The measurement frequency is between 1 and 5 kHz within a range of 50 to 200m. All systems are pulse based.Typical representatives are: CYRAX 2200, RIEGL LMS Z210.

Re: First commercially available terrestrial laser scanner
Looking at cyra.com website the Cyrax 2400 was launched commercially in 1998...
I seem to remember another system around at about that time which looked pretty neat by CALLIDUS Precision Systems GmbH, because it was claimed to be the first fully panoramic 3D Laser Scanning system commercially available June 1999.
Acquired by Trimble Jan 9th 2009
Would be great to know if any of these are still about for the LSF collection

The Callidus Precision Systems GmbH is a small-to medium-sized company based in the German Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt. It was founded on the 6 June, 1990.
As well as providing a comprehensive range of services for installation and maintenance of hardware and software, the company concentrated in its first years mainly on the production of technical software. Considerable experience was obtained programming conveyor belt and ordering systems in the area of automation technology.
In addition, between 1990 and 1996, the company was actively involved in building up the largest chemical data banks in the world "Beilstein-Online" and "Gmelin-Online" for the Gmelin and Beilstein Institute of the Max-Planck-Company in Frankfurt/M.
Since 1996 the company has been working on the development of the laser 3D scanning system known as "Callidus®".

Re: First commercially available terrestrial laser scanner
Interesting. I feel like a late arrival here purchasing my first TLS in 2010.
It would seem like Rudolph Staiger has written the most about the history of TLS. In the article linked the stages of development progressed quickly with 1997 the 1st, 2002 the 2nd, 2007 the 3rd, and 2009 the 4th. I am wondering if we are still in the 4th generation of TLS? If so what will be the 5th? Progression seems to have slowed down somewhat.

Re: First commercially available terrestrial laser scanner
MENSI had their first commercially available scanner in 1992. It was the MENSI SOISIC: 10m range, 100 pts/sec, 0.3mm range noise.
To be fair, I think the first customer buying one was in 1993. For technology archeologists, here is the old website: http://mensi.free.fr/english/techno.htm
And MENSI became part of Trimble 10 years after, in 2003.

Hello Everyone,
I have just published my articles on the history of midrange TLS. They took over 10 years to write.

Hi Adam. What an incredible achievement. I just glimpsed and downloaded and wanted to thank you for all your work here. I have often though of doing something similar for the forensics area and have done some of it but this is a great resource that i will definitely use!
Cheers!
Eugene
