We have scanned a US army helmet with our laser scanner.

here are a few tips to get a good quality scan from your Edge Scan Arm.

1: Spray developers spray, or foot powder, or matte white spray coating on the object. Matte white provides the best color and texture for laser scanning.

2: Practice fluid movements and keeping the scanner at the optimal range for the material and finish you're scanning (obviously green light if you've got one of the newer scanners.)

3: Take a few minutes to set up a scan profile for the material/finish you're scanning. Don't use the auto/hdr ones on the older scanners because it takes just a few minutes to set up a manual profile for the specific material and finish you're scanning. I've made several profiles for cast aluminum, shot blasted aluminum, plastic etc... It works so much better than using the automatic focus mode.

4: When scanning, be sure to press the green button atleast once every 20 seconds or so, for some reason the scanners seem to overfill a data buffer or something similar that results in scan data loss if you scan continuously, at least in Design X and new Geomagic software.

If you can't seem to get it resolved, we could definitely scan it for you, or try and troubleshoot over webex or something like that.

No problem, let me know if any further assistance is needed.

Another tip is to force the software to scan a pointcloud only, some software attempts to mesh during the data collection process, and I prefer to check coverage, quality, and perform some pointcloud post processing steps prior to meshing.

Hi Tommy,

we scanned another simple part for practice and a helmet shell but the quality seems to be poor for Geomagic x to handle, would it be possible to send you one of the files to advise me on how to improve the overall process.

Best Regards

Khaled
