Maybe if the survey prism is about 1-2km away... (literally)

But any modern scanner will be fried by a prism at closer ranges, as the optical receiver used to measure distances to naturally reflecting targets are far more sensitive than those used for retro-reflectors.
RIEGL scanners have the ability to 'blink' when they encounter a retro-reflector at such close ranges, to prevent the optical receivers from being degraded.

From your question, it sounds like either the Leica MS60 or Trimble SX10 are your cup of tea.

As I said, i'm not searching for a total station which scans. I want fast scanning (full dome) with a separate instrument.
A better solution would be to install an RTK GNSS system on top of the scanner (the coordinates feed right into the scanner) and take scans every 30m to 50m. Each scan only takes about 1:15 with images and 15million measurement panos, so it is actually more efficient to simply stop and scan than it is to walk further and level the scanner for traversing.
So with a Riegl, i can place my sokkia GRX1 rtk system above the scanner? Does the scanner connect directly with the gps unit or through my separate fieldbook? Is there an internal compass for direction and what is it's accuracy?

For external setups this would be great : place scanner, hook up gps, take readings from compass and start scanning.

I think i'm going to geobusiness and hassle all the vendors with my questions.

Yes, exactly.
The coordinates are logged directly by the scanner and stored with the scan data.

Yes, there is an internal compass, and the accuracy is typically around a few degrees, but this depends on how you configure it and whether or not you're in an environment where there is a lot of ferrous material.

There are other workflows, like backsighting, (not necessarily traversing) where you can use a control target to obtain the azimuth, instead of using the internal compass values.
For external setups this would be great : place scanner, hook up gps, take readings from compass and start scanning.
It is incredibly fast. I wouldn't scan outdoors any other way at this point, unless the project or environmental conditions forced me to use an alternative workflow.

Always a good idea!

If possible, I'd also recommend to set up a test case for salesmen to work through. Having multiple brands executing the same project is incredibly enlightening. ;)

You can use a Z+F 5010c or even better 5010X to do traverse.

I've purchased the Riegl instrument. Hope to give some feedback as soon as i can collect the instrument and test the procedures for my use.
