Outsource 3D Modeling
Has any of you guys been doing any outscourcing of 3d modelling from pointclouds?
At my company, we are doing a lot of laserscanning of buildings etc. and the modelling part has been a heavy burden on or modelling devision, so we are looking for a reliable and skilled company to do some of that part over seas.
Any good expirences with any companys?
What do you guys think of outscourcing?

Re: Outsource 3D Modeling
We have InfiPoints, so we can automatically extract pipes/planes/ground slope meshes/floor plans, etc... clean the extraction results up quickly, and commit to further modeling of equipment or structural elements, or send the cleaned automatic extraction results back to you or off to another company for finishing.
This approach allows us to accomplish the bulk of the modeling extremely quickly, with most of the project modeling time spent on modeling the misc. equipment in Design X from pointcloud clippings. I feel like this approach would be cost effective for you, as we can work with either registered pointcloud projects in any major format, or unregistered scans.
Send me a PM if you would like to discuss further.

Re: Outsource 3D Modeling
I'm guessing you are going to get more of us reaching out offering our services then constructive feedback on outsourcing experiences
I have only met a few companies that have outsourced to various countries outside of the US and the common reaction I have heard is that you get what you pay for (same applies for hiring out work within the US you could argue)
This has mainly been modeling companies based out of India
So although their rates have been on the lower side the quality of work, QC process and overall detail has been all over the place
This is strictly word of mouth with zero personal experience so take it for what is it worth
Also, I may be biased since we do offer modeling services

Re: Outsource 3D Modeling
TommyMaddox how is infipoints? I requested a trial, havent heard back yet, its amazing how many new softwares are trying to solve the point cloud to 3d modelling. What other software have you guys seen?
I am looking for as much automatic pipe detection as possible, and would be really nice if it could detect the ductwork even if its rectangular or be able to vectorize point cloud that is clean and fast.
Thanks,
John

Re: Outsource 3D Modeling
It's pretty fantastic software. I just finished writing a gigantic US spec pipe and structural steel catalog for it, so that it isn't limited to replacing extracted pipes with JIS (Japan International Spec) piping and structural steel elements.john-newbegin wrote:TommyMaddox how is infipoints? Automatic pipe detection is phenomenal and extremely fast. It extracts planes and pipes at the same time. It took about an hour and 15 minutes to extract piping and planes from a 272 scan project. At this time it won't detect rectangular ductwork as such, but rather a collection of planes. We complement InfiPoints with Design X to model equipment and other components. There is also an automatic segment extraction feature for making floor plan drawings quickly and easily.
If you want, I can run a sample dataset and get you pictures and time metrics quicker than you can get a trial response or anything through Elysium. I can accept already registered projects, unified pointclouds, or unregistered pointclouds in most formats so let me know.
We've been the sole US customer/user since August and we use it every single day and are still finding uses for all the features it offers.
We were formerly a Kubit Plant user, but the main problem was that it was tied to AutoCad which offered nothing but crashes up to 10 times a day.
You could also use Edgewise MEP by ClearEdge 3D, as it is the only other software package i'm aware of that offers automatic modeling features.
PM me if you have any other questions.

Tommy,
Could you please post some sample floor pans made from InfiPoints? ~S

Absolutely. I'll make a post in the InfiPoints section tomorrow.Scott wrote:There is also an automatic segment extraction feature for making floor plan drawings quickly and easily.

Hi Malte,
we are VMT Solutions http://vmts.ch/ from Vietnam, we do outsourcing pointcloud to BIM in Archicad, Revit...
Since 2009 until now we did a lot of project, we just show in website some interesting project.
Thank you for your consideration

But we heard that a lot of other Danish companies outsource a lot of their 3d modelling, either to eastern-europe or india and is still doing it succesfully. Some of them opend their own devision in india, to make sure, they could hire the skilled people and fire the worthless, so they could make sure the quality was great.
My problem isnt that i wont pay for the quality, im not looking to squeese every single penny out of a guy in india, i just want good results and a professionel company.
