3DLM launch StreetMapper Fractional Ownership Plan

Post by joe.3dlm »

Press release:

StreetMapper, the vehicle-based laser mapping system, is now being offered on a Fractional Ownership basis providing affordable access to leading edge technology.

With projected cost savings of more than 25 per cent and without the up front investment required for an outright purchase, the StreetMapper Fractional Ownership Plan is set to broaden the appeal of the world's most accurate mobile laser mapping system.

"Industries burdened by high fixed costs of assets, high fixed cost of asset ownership – such as service and maintenance, and rapid technological innovation are prime candidates for managing assets through fractional ownership and it is a popular concept in the aviation market," commented Dr Graham Hunter, Managing Director of StreetMapper developers 3D Laser Mapping.

"For StreetMapper customers there are significant advantages. The plan offers real cost savings relative to purchasing a commissioned surveying service and reduced capital outlay and associated staff costs compared to purchase of a full system. This plan allows organisations to take advantage of the very latest laser mapping technology and expert support with high levels of asset utilisation at a much lower risk."

Under the StreetMapper Fractional Ownership Plan potential customers can purchase an actual fraction of a system on an operated basis. This purchase can be shown as an asset on the balance sheet and depreciated, just like any other asset. Ownership under the plan consists of three cost components; an initial investment covering the cost of share of the system, a monthly service fee to cover the cost of managing the system including system maintenance, insurance, extended warranties and overheads etc and a cost per hour or per mile of surveying. Comparison of the costs of a traditional managed survey versus a survey conducted by a fractional owner highlight a cost saving per lane mile of up to £200.

StreetMapper 360, which is a joint development between UK based 3D Laser Mapping and German based guidance and navigation specialist IGI, has been specifically designed for the rapid 3D mapping of highways, runways, railways, infrastructure and buildings. Using vehicle-mounted lasers offering a 360-degree field of view StreetMapper enables high precision mapping to a range of 300 metres, a capacity of 300,000 measurements per second per sensor and recorded accuracies in independent real world projects of better than 10 millimetres.

Sounds really interesting Joe - Ballpark figures? Or is POA only.

We often hear £150-250k bandied about in terms of outright costs for a whole system, so it would be interesting to see how this scheme operates.

Paul,

The prices you have noted are typical for a GIS-grade mobile mapping system. StreetMapper is more expensive as this is a survey-grade mobile laser scanning system with 2 scanners, a high grade GPS/INS and 2 x 12 MPixel cameras. This type of system is capable of 1cm accuracy in good GPS conditions.

Purchasing a full StreetMapper is a considerable capital investment and requires high utilisation in order to have a good return on the investment.

Fractional Ownership allows companies to purchase a fraction that matches their expected utilisation so that their ROI remains high at lower utilisation. For a similar capital cost as a terrestrial laser scanner, plus a monthly fee (to cover operations, warranties, insurance, etc) you can get started with fractional ownership. This provides a fixed number of allocated days where we will mobilise the system anywhere in the EU, capture the data and provide geo-referenced colour point data. You look after ground control and process the data using your existing TLS processing software to provide final deliverables.

The scheme has been launched in North America, and details of how it operates there are available from our website: http://goo.gl/wQ2KP

Cheers,
Joe
