Hi,
we have an existing petrochem client for whom we do extensive scanning, they've now specifically asked that we scan some pipe-racks using a lidar drone (not photo-based tech).
Does anyone know of a service provider with a Ricopter or similar lidar drone that could partner for a relatively small scan project in Benelux?
Similarly, can you operate such a drone 50kgs+(?) over a petrochem plant? Irrespective or what the plant operator says..
Thanks in advance.
Richard.

Uuuu, to me it sounds like a health and safety nightmare! Imagine having a 50Kg mass dropping from 30 meters onto a hot regen or tank valve....

Not to mention the accuracy of the data...
I hope they don't plan to model any pipe data from a UAS laser scan.
Couldn't imagine it would be accurate enough to produce pipe models for retrofitting or other puropses. Maybe clashing at a stretch.

It would be good enough to take into PDMS and model all the elements as dead straight thou

Thanks for the replies.
Looks like only aeroscout.ch are basically alone in this market for the time being. A day scanning will also involve a day planning and a couple of days travelling and therefore come in at euro20k or so.
The safety issue bothers be greatly, I cannot shake off the theory that some Owner-Operator Snr Manager has seen something related on Discovery Channel etc and dictated that "we should definately do this!" and junior managment are falling in. However, when we get to their control room to get permits signed off they're gonna say "you wanna do WHAT?!?"
{grinds teeth}
Accuracy probably not too much of a problem, such big plants almost always involve bringing together various and questionable data sources. In this case I'd make sure we have good terrestiral scans all around (controlled with total station) and then break up the drone data into <100m lengths and c-c the drone data into the "good" terrestrial data. As long as the relative precision in the drone data is constant we should be ok after some careful QA checks.

Sounds like a nightmare at the end of the day the engineers on the shift can refuse to give you the permit and you will allow them to fight over it themselves at the end of the day make sure that that company has got a massive insurance (10 million £ +)
Keep us posted, really curious how it will pan out
