Accuracy and system

Post by MalteHC » Mon Feb 19, 2018 9:19 am

Im looking very muck into mobile mapping and think this is a field, we will see much more of, in the future.
I have been checking out a lot of the different solutions and must say, it is a jungle!
All the providers says that you have to pay big bucks, for a mobile mapping solution and is always trying to sell you a system, where you can collect data of a street in two minutes. But is the accuracy and system suiteble for anything else, than highwayscanning?

Does anyone have any pros and cons about the different systems and what accuracy can you espect for a mobile mapping solution?

For what i can find out, Riegel is still the leading provider of mobile mapping solutions, but is also very expensive compared to the leica pegasus 2 system. Does anyone know what the accuracy difference is?

This is an open discustion, so feel free to give your point of view.

I have experience with Trimble MX8 and Riegl VMX-1HA. Zero hand on experience with Pegasus. Oregon DOT uses Pegasus 2. The Pegasus 2 can use Z-F scanner or Leica Pxx. I would recommend scanner with 360 degree field of view.

To get "survey grade" particularly the absolute vertical accuracy, you will need ground controls to "adjust" or "register" you scan to local ground controls and targets. How the registration software work is very important. Please note that different organizations has a different definition of "Survey grade" vertical accuracy (some uses 3 cm and some uses 1 cm or less). The density of ground control depends on the vertical accuracy requirement. You will need more controls for GNSS challenged area.

The images from camera on board MX8 and VMX-1HA are disappointing compare the Ladybug5 images. I highly recommend getting Ladybug5 or 5+ camera. FLIR software processing the raw 12bit image gives a much better color and white balance.

The hardware performances are pretty close across different MTLS systems. I would look close into the software and make sure they are compatible to what you trying to produce for you customers.

The following reports are what we developed for our research related to MTLS. Read them if you cannot go to sleep. :D

Best regards,
