Gauging interest in development of new dynamic mapping solution

Post by mwaychoff »

Given following high level specifications that I now believe I can bring to market please share what you think I should set price point for a potential new dynamic mapping solution that I am considering finishing development for release by end of this calendar year. I have learned a lot on this forum & trust your opinions here. Your responses can help me greatly determine what features I can include to hit what price point you think market may bear. Thank you in advance for your vote on this opinion poll.

- Handheld scan head + backpack battery
- Color point cloud
- ~90degree vertical x ~120degree horizontal
- Indoor >60M points per second <1% drift with <2cm accuracy at 4m
- Outdoor <2% drift with <4cm accuracy at 8m
- Full Windows10 CPU
- 1TB data collector
- Output format that works well with Autodesk Revit workflow

Bit more information about perceived need & my fresh approach:

I appreciate 'Best in class' capabilities very much but not when tolerances exceed business use case requirements, prices remain very high, & additional barriers to entry for adopting this new technology such as steep learning curves & tedious post processing issues continue to persist.

My personal experience is beginning & end of lifecycle of buildings so I am familiar with & am focused on addressing needs of real estate planners, architects, & building owners first. So from my perspective the needs of surveyors & engineers are a distant second. TBH unfortunately this seems to be the complete opposite perspective of all hardware & software vendors that I have come across thus far.

I do not see any current offering in between Velodyne Puck based solutions such as GeoSLAM, Kaarta, Paracosm, Gexcel, & NavVis & structured light solutions such as Occipital & IndoorReality(& to lesser extent Matterport). This to me seems like a huge gap.

Therefore it is my goal to start with fresh pair of eyes & seek: 'Good enough' spec.s that more responsibly address specific use cases related to space planning & facilities asset management, are Much more reasonably priced, & connect all way through workflow to final end user experiences.

I do Not want to assume too much & genuinely welcome your ideas, comments, &/or concerns in this discussion thread.

There are many variables & therefore I am hopeful that through some crowdsource brainstorming here I can get closer to defining a compelling, viable, & clever new dynamic mapping solution that fulfills identified capability gap & specific business needs so it can rise to being worthy to try to bring to market.

Few comments on my spec thus far:
I am currently testing IMU + global shutter camera all in one well synced unit for accurate location tracking. My initial raw data will be based on robot operating system(ROS) .BAG file format which I will make avlb to advanced users. I believe strongly software has to be part of my solution but I am leaning towards providing an open data schema + growing list of software specific extensions rather than one size fits all API or SDK.

Sounds interesting. I look forward to seeing how this progresses along with some sample data once it becomes available.

Thanks for positive comment Shane. I am waiting on few parts to be delivered & then will need few weeks to perform testing. So hopefully I can provide example data in month or so. What format do you recommend?
