FARO - Range vs reliability of data
Hello All,
I was lucky enough to work with Leica P40 and Faro Focus 330 in my last company. The quality of the P40 scan data was phenomenal yet the Faro, not so much. Despite the advertised range of the Faro, we did no use any data over 30m away as it was deemed unreliable. I am now looking to go it alone on a new venture and want to buy a used scanner that is suitable for a wide range of applications so as not to limit myself.
Do you agree that the X330 has unreliable data beyond 30m?
What do you consider the maximum usable range of data for a lesser model, say X120?
Best regards

Why did you consider the X330 data unreliable beyond 30 m?

Re: FARO - Range vs reliability of data
That was the company viewpoint, I'm not entirely sure why. I think due to noise and accuracy over longer range. I wonder whether this is something that is generally felt with other surveyors with more experience of FARO scanners. All views are welcomed.

Re: FARO - Range vs reliability of data
What about the scan data quality of different range scanners within the same manufacturer, for example Faro S150 and S350, is the quality identical on scanning distance 150m?

Re: FARO - Range vs reliability of data
Can somebody tell if e.g. Faro S350 creates better scanning data in short ranges (<150m) compared to S150?

Re: FARO - Range vs reliability of data
I think a lot of the issues with long range Faro scan data is the internal level. The Leica scanners have survey grade compensators so the long range data can be considered more reliable than that of a Faro. There was a thread on here a while back comparing the levels of the different scanners. I think the Leica was +/- 1.5 seconds and the Faro 54 seconds. That's from memory so I might be wrong. It would be nice if a Faro rep could give us some numbers on the S350 to compare. If you're thinking of going out on your own you should consider what line of work you'll be involved in. Small scale scenes are fine with a Faro, large sites or tall buildings maybe not so much. A lot of it is down to the user and your field procedures anyway.

Absolutely. Whilst the Faro is a great scanner it's scan duration at high resultion for far away detail make it less viable as a 'one scanner for all' option. I've yet to trial it in the field but having tried all the other scanners on the market, my money is on Z&F.

Re: FARO - Range vs reliability of data
We have Leica and Faro and tend to reach for Faro simply due to ease of use, quickness and portability. Especially in buildings and plenum spaces. We have the option and equipment to tie to survey control also. Faro registration goes smoothly until it doesn't and that is always a PITA.
Leica data is cleaner and I prefer it. But I hate having to sit there and pick targets. Also, I really like the FARO webshare as it gets some sort of scan product into anybody's hands quite easily (just a link, no download).

You should try Cyclone's Auto-Align and visual registration. Much faster than picking targets. I do agree with you on webshare.
