Arial photogrammetry as add-on to laserscanning

Post by Valentin »

Hi,

Long time laserscanner here, I was wondering what kind of drone/UAV would I need, if I wanted to use photogrammetry to add to my groundbased laserscans. I am thinking roofs and other hard to get to areas? What kind of specs should I be looking at?

Thanks in advance

Phantom 4 Pro in my opinion is the sweet spot.
Great camera, wind resistance, easy to use, with a lot of apps available to plan your flight, it fits any project from a roof to a few square kilometers area with ease.
Form small projects you can check the mavic family (mavic mini 2 too), but there are drawbacks, including limited wind resistance..

Thank you that is very helpfull,

It seems the phantom would be in a weight category that requires a pilot license and the mavic mini doesn't which is a big plus especially since it would for a starters be an experiment! Something to add to the christmas wishlist, if I can wait that long...

Do you not need a license for any UAV for commercial work now in the EU? But if its just to learn/practise then im sure you its just a hobby working towards a license!?

Keep an eye on the shutter type on certain UAV camera - https://medium.com/the-science-of-drone ... 8945fe523d

I'm using a Mavic 2 Pro. It has the same sensor as the Phantom, but is more stable in a breeze in my experience. It also packs up nice and small, which is nice. People will talk about the rolling shutter being an issue but I've taken lots of pictures with it and haven't had any problems.

I use Bentley ContextCapture to process the models and have compared the same data sets that were processed with Agisoft (Metashape) and Pix4D. ContextCapture does a better job.

I know both Metashape and Pix4D offer rolling shutter compensation, so shutter type is not so critical. Not sure about Context capture, but the results produced are for sure excellent!

In Europe Mavic Pro and Phantom are in the same category with respect to flight rules. The price is similar too. Nice to know Mavic pro offers also a great wind resistance. For sure it's more portable.

Mavic Mini (and Mini 2) being under 250g has some advantages, but wind resistance is an issue, and there are limited options to have automated flight.
A small project can be hand flown anyway (like this one).

what about a work flow that does not use Realty Capture and would use the LiDAR as hard point and the Photogramity as infill?

Have a look at Bently Context Capture. That's probably the only other alternative that hasn't been mentioned besides from 3DF Zephyr.
