I worry about the business model - available exclusively online. That can't be the whole story...

Re: BLK360 wow new Leica/Autodesk scanner
Specs:
2,2 lb = 1 Kg - OK
Made of aluminium - Super
360,000 points a second - OK
60 m range - OK
3 minute/scans + Pano ? - OK
HDR Panorama - OK
(Resolution unknown probably close to the Istar, which is enough to colourise point-cloud , but sucks non the less if you like to discern details at more than 3 m away)
Infrared Camera - OK
Approx 50 scans with one charge - SUPER
Instant Registration with Autodesk ReCAP 360 PRO. - OK
Collaborative data sharing in the cloud. - OK
Seamless transfer with iPAD - thanks, NO , not in that ecosystem again.
4 mm accuracy (don't know at what range though just info I found on the net ) - NO, No , No did I say no ?
All of this for $15,995 (16000 + 300 for Recap 360 , 3 years subscription - Is not that cheap if you think that I can buy a 3 years old 62000 Km , Mercedes Benz
Things missing unless someone can disprove:
Scan without the IPAD
Level Compensator. (Good luck in narrow corridors without targets - like scanning for a a school)
Simple handle to securely grab it. (The jokers from Faro are the previous master of fail at this, now they sell you a case for 1000 euro to keep the scanner secure on transport)
Are u still wondering why 4mm accuracy ,
for Leica to protect their other super expensive bulky products (You know what I'm talking about)
Whom will need something like this :
The one that need a scanner on the go for Architectural Projects - It's perfect for this , the price comes in handy for the cheapskate Architects , that will never pay the actual price for a day of scanning. Now they can go do it them-self , good riddance.
I will be glad to see those experts wannabe, coming out of their 2D box, and embrace 3D in for BIM.
Whom doesn't need this:
The people that need to deliver on industrial projects.
Still you will have to pay a premium of 80000 Euro for a Z&F 5016, in 2017 , which is awesome but again is ridiculously priced.(Not that Leica has anything on their market to properly compete with this)
For a scanning provider like us , how many scans we will have to make to cover the price for a Z&F New scanner ... Don't like to know since after 5 years when the bank will be paid you've going to be again, way behind , when it comes to technology.
Please keep on geting out new scanners we will be glad to purchase a HDS 7000 second hand when the price drops under 15000 euro
I sorried myself for the rant.

I don't know 4 mm seems fine to me and not much of a differentiating factor. With the possible exception of Surphaser, I don't think anybody is really producing data that is much more accurate than that +/- 1 mm or so.Singularity wrote:Are u still wondering why 4mm accuracy ,

Now what the accuracy of your combined point cloud is after Recap's automatic registration is another question.

Everything will become clear over time - this is a product which is not available to buy until Spring 2017.

Re: BLK360 wow new Leica/Autodesk scanner
Some interesting points about the spec list but probably not shared by everyone.
The BLK tears down some of the fundamental barriers to entry that have always been associated with LiDAR (Cost and learning curve).
A few short years ago scanning was deployed on "scanning" jobs. i.e it was not cost or time effective to bring the kit onto a high proportion of sites, especially whilst the kit was still on the last job. Now scanning is everywhere. The gear is cheaper and faster and the software is even starting to be quite intuitive (Visual alignment).
When i worked for LGS HDS I sold plenty of scanners to companies who wouldn't have justified the latest kit of 3/4 years ago. I met plenty more people who felt they still couldn't justify it at the time. As a one man scanning company I still can't justify purchasing a P30/40 without taking on substantial risk (I hire them instead).
The concept of a 15K scanner with 4mm accuracy is justifiable to a huge amount of people in the industry and an exciting one for lots of people who have never seen LiDAR before.
Lets reserve judgement on the quality of the data until we have some but at this stage I think it's hard to be cynical about a concept that is clearly a great step forward.
My two cents.

Re: BLK360 wow new Leica/Autodesk scanner
Anyone else thinking mobile phone?
Expensive equipment "given away" at the expense of monthly/annual contract?
Or a pay per scan financial model where buyers shell out for "bundles" i.e. 100 scans for X amount, 1000 for X amount minus a percentage......

Re: BLK360 wow new Leica/Autodesk scanner
The big talking point here appears to be the workflow and the 'live' collaboration from site to office not the scanning/ capture capabilities of the hardware itself. It's all about getting your data back from site and shared out to decision makers in the most timely and efficient way. This product fills that gap in the market!

Re: BLK360 wow new Leica/Autodesk scanner
I think this would be a valid question but the fact that it seems that the only way to register currently is with Recap, it makes a consumer friendly disconnect between the hardware and software.Andy H wrote:Anyone else thinking mobile phone?

I can't imagine one being a loss leader with all revenue coming through another.

See my post on the other thread.
"Leica Geosystems has always provided software support for its sensor products and will support BLK360 in Leica Cyclone at BLK360 product release in Spring 2017."
