Greeting LSF,
What do you guys think the best scanner for the reverse engineering of machine parts is (bang for your buck? and if price isn't an issue?) with high accuracy
Some parts are reflective. Some parts have odd contours and hard to reach crevices.

Re: Best scanner for reverse engineering machined parts
We use and have had good luck with the GeoMagic Design X/Studio software in conjunction with the FARO EDGE arm with the Laser Line Probe.
One of the best aspects is the versatility and portability of the EDGE arm. We can use it for so many different tasks, from machine alignment to fixture/carrier checks to on-site inspection. We have even measured, modeled, and issued a quote-quality drawing on an extremely time critical part on-site within a few hours.

We have a Case Study highlighting the use of Z+F Laser Scanners in the decommissioning of offshore platforms.

Faro Arm with the Laser Probe, we are using Polyworks at the moment. We also use Vantage Trackers for this at times when it is possible.
I don't think there is a scanner on the market that will get you the accuracy you need. Most all of the Focus type scanners are +/- 2mm, I believe the Faro Arm is +/-0.002".

Re: Best scanner for reverse engineering machined parts
In terms of a scanner and what you get for your money, the new David Laser Scanner SLS-5 looks very appealing. It's less than $5k and has a dual camera setup using a projector with structured white light. In my opinion, it is one of the best value scanners out there on the market and the software now does 3D deviation analysis too.
If price was not an issue, I would say an "arm" type scanner as mentioned above. I have used the FARO Edge on many occasions and I hear it works best with Polyworks. I tend to use the native Cam2 software which is fine for my purposes.

Re: Best scanner for reverse engineering machined parts
I'd go ROMER arm, good quality scanning head (we've got a Nikon) and Polyworks. Done quite a bit of this stuff in the past, reverse engineering (i.e NURBS surfacing) isn't something you can pick up over night so make sure you include training with the software.
