looking for sub-mm accuracy laser scanners, range=1 to 50m+

Post by SAttaya »

I know about the Surphaser/TrimbleFX and have used one in the past.
I know about the Z&F, but have never used one; nor its "registration" software.
I know about the Metris/NikonMetrology Laser Radar MV330/350.
-- 2-4k points per second is sure slow after the phased based scanners we've been using lately.

1. are there any other "long-range"/terrestrial laser scanners other than the above?
2. is anyone willing to compare any two (or all 3) of the above based upon their own recent (last 3-5 years) experiences? Or even state/list pros and cons of them individually?
3. Any other suggestions that will address the following requirements in addition to the sub-mm accuracy requirement?

Project will be scanning something either large diameter (>4m radius) items and/or assembly/milling equipment that:
1. we can not touch (so, no putting photogrammetry dots on it)
2. large (not less than 10 m per side and not more than 230 ft high (which would be done in parts)
3. that will either be:
-a very shiny aluminum OR
-b tooling with Blue/Green/Yellow paint, but
-c No composites at this time.
4. none of the data can be sent out as it is all proprietary, so no Recap Photo, etc

Just trying to make sure we haven't missed a scanner or other system that we should evaluate.
Looked at and rejected the 1/2 arc second total stations.
Don't know of any photogrammetry system that I could use to measure
the trueness to round of something 8M in diameter.

Thanks, y'all are an encyclopedia of knowledge.

Not a scanner but maybe a Leica Laser Tracker?

Have you found a solution to your problem?

I face a similar challenge:
We want to measure the floor of a hall with a global accuracy of <1mm.
So far we couldn't find anything, except the ATS60, but it's in the wrong price range... :D

Did you look at the Artec Ray (https://www.artec3d.com/portable-3d-sca ... ser-ray-v2)

Never used one, but it looks like a re-branded Surphaser.

Anyone else out there used an Artec Ray (not the Artec handhelds, please) ?

Control is going to be a nightmare over a large flat space and using a total station
instrument accuracy is 1+? mm typically (Leica TS15) so already you've busted your accuracy budget.

Of course you could use a tracker for control...

The engineering limit is 1/1,000,000, and the general engineering practicality is 1/1,000.

1/10 to 1/100 is suitable for everyday life, but is inaccurate for engineering practice, and 1/10,000,000 is impractical.

As an example, you want to measure a bridge length of about 1 km. What level of measurement accuracy do you really want?
1 mm accuracy means 1/1,000,000.
1 m accuracy means 1/1,000.

How about semiconductor industry:
3 nm pattern on 30 cm wafer.
It is 1/100,000,000!
Of course relatively.
