Registration of 20 scans by matching planes

Post by Daniel Wujanz »

This video exemplifies the workflow of our plane-based registration software Scantra for a project with 20 scans. It took less than 15 minutes to register the lot by using standard hardware (Intel i7-7700HQ 2.8 GHz; 16 GB RAM) and the latest Scantra release including 29 registrations among the scans and two runs of our bundle adjustment.

The mean relative accuracy for pairwise registrations (in terms of translation) is 0.38 mm. However, these relative quality measures are not really meaningful since they do not reflect the characteristics of your network configuration. This is why we conduct variance-covariance propagation in order to achieve this. For the given project the absolute 3D-error resulting from the bundle adjustment sums up to 0.76 mm which even satisfies the high standards of Geodetic Engineering.

Note that there have been recent posts in the forum that asked for the "best" registration software. There are plenty of solutions on the market (with good cause) tailored to solve certain registration problems, e.g. for monitoring geo-morphology, the field of forestry or capturing the built environment. Hence, I do believe that this question cannot be reasonably answered. The choice of scanner AND software always depends on the job - and per definition every project is different ; )

Have a good weekend!

Daniel
