New scanner ZF 5016

Post by MalteHC »

Hi Guys

We are going to buy a new scanner and would like to make sure, that we picks the right one.
We are mainly doing building scannings and road scannings.
Our setup for buildingscanning is pretty usal i think. A couple of targets around the building and c2c for the remaining scans.
FOr roadscannings, we mount our scanner to a car on a selfleveling mount and add a prism on top of the scanner.
In this way we keep measureing every scanstaiton with a totalstation and moove the scanner 30 meters pr. scan. THis workflow has been wery usefull and efficient with our old leica scanner along with cyclone.
But what really triggers me with the ZF scanner is that it has an internal IMU so we doesnt have do do so much manually work making the C2C constraints at the office (Translation). Has anyone any expirience in how easy this is to do with ZF 5016 and laser control and if this is our best choice?
OBS. we can not do the in field registration, doing to we slow down traffic in rush hour and have two extra guys, just to block ane of the lanes, so we have to get done as quick as possible, even though it means a few more minutes in the office.

Hi Malte,

at first: I dont have experience with roadscanning, all i can talk about is scanning with the 5010X indoors. My last scanning-project was a big hangar. The estimated positioning worked pretty well for the first ~20 scans. After that, i had to align the most scan-positions manually. It was indoor (=no GPS), so i guess if you do it outdoors, it will work much better.

My opinion: The registration in the office works smarter with ZFLC instead of Cyclone, thanks to SCANTRA.

first: I love Z + F 5016 .... light, compact and the ZF pointclouds are the most "fascinating".
but ... looking for the fastest workflow on field and a reliable registering software, I just purchase a Riegl VZ400i and I'm learnig RiScan Pro
Keep in mind that I was used to scanning with a Z + F Imager 5010 and register with Laser Control and for a three day intensive job I rented a Z + F Imager 5010x (with IMU, like 5016).
but at the end .... if you're looking for speed .... give a try to Riegl VZ-400i.

I have done a job (A church) including 136 scans in one day and all registered on site with Z+F 5016. This the you tube link:

I'd seriously consider the new Leica Geosystems RTC360... ;)

Twice the speed in terms of scanning (imaging is much faster also), and less cost. Full in-field registration, simple (optional) tablet workflow with Cyclone FIELD 360. Try and get a demonstration! :D

For what i can see, is the Reigl scanner mostly for outside scanning and not so much a all-around scanner (correct me if im wrong).
And the RTC scanner is an upgraded BLK scanner, which should work well for indoormapping, but once again, not an all around scanner, doing to range and accuracy.

When i do outdoor mapping i have a prism on top of the station for 2/3 of my scannings, so shouldent this coordinate help the IMU to do the auto Cloud to Cloud?

Does anyone know anything about the accuracy of the 5016 scanner, compared to leicas new P50 scanner?

Hi Malte,

Sure this should work. Even the In-Field registration. It is meant to work in parallel, while you wait for the next scan to finish. Hence, no extra time is needed to block the roads and you can be sure it works out, before leaving the site. It has helped me a lot, even on large scale projects (>400scans) without slowing down. Feel free to contact me, if you have any further questions [email protected]

Best regards,
Chris
