Regarding the possibility to launch a new external camera to came from Faro Series S, we expect something like an external plastic skin fixed to the body of the scanner, with multi sensor cameras built-in, beside the mirror’s space (like Leica’s RTC with a low parallax error, only 35 mm). It also should integrate within the plastic body, an elegant plug on the top of the scanner, to get energy and transfer data to colorize the point cloud.
As Faro users, we would love the idea of taking pictures with external high resolution CMOs sensors, meanwhile the scanner takes laser data.
I would say more: If Faro's would ask their user, we would have suggested designing on the other side/plug another symmetric plastic skin with thermal sensors to take thermal images at the same time.
Do you imagine scanning and taking color pictures and thermal pictures all at the same time?
If I were an engineer in Faro, this would be my proposal. This is what we expect from a German engineering.
It looks the final design could be an external 360 camera over the scanner (maybe a 5 years old Ricoh device) like a big bump, maybe with a huge parallax error, and a big picture from the top of the scanner under it.
Dear FARO engineers, we appreciate your effort to improve the time for taking pictures, but I suggest asking your customers to understand what we need from you, this new solution is not bad, but honestly speaking we expected something more elegant from you....
Find below some ideas to develop in the ecosystem for your devices, and we hope someone in FARO could read this topic and give feedback:
1) IMPROVE USERS SAFETY: An Smartwatch app (Apple Watch, and also Android) to remotely start/stop scanning, and be able to check scanning time in a hide location. The mobile web mirroring is not bad, but not a good solution, we need both hands to manipulate the scanner in risky circumstances, one hand to hold the scanner and the other hand to hold on to the fall arrestors when scanning in dangerous spaces.
2) IMPROVE UX/UI: (User Experience, and User Interface) Please Redesign the interface. We are around 50, and it is very difficult to read a 6 pixel sized text, while "98% of the screen is empty". Please INCREASE the size of the text, hour, level icon, use bold fonts instead of light ones. It would be a good idea to hire a UX/UI designer for this purpose.
3) OPEN an API to allow expert users to improve the scanner with external solutions, devices via external plugs, or new apps. I am sure that we can develop external applications or setups that finally will revert to FARO as a suitable and flexible scanner, and it will increase your sales.
4) PROVIDE a 3D model of the scanner in STEP format: we would like to develop 3D printed elements to protect it, or attach lights, or cameras, or rain covers... imagine hundreds of STL models in "Thingeverse" for our scanners. We would love it.
5).... does someone have more ideas? Please if you do, answer this topic to push FARO to improve the day by day work.......
Please do not consider this post as an aggressive topic. We love FARO, and this is only a proposal to make you listen to your clients... we are happy with our devices, but if you would hear and develop our ideas, and invest to promote solutions to our requirements, I am sure ww would be happier, and you will make from FARO a stronger scanning company.

What Tommy said...
FARO needs to come up with a new scanner. They are way behind on this as far as I am concerned. These incremental upgrades and "variation on a theme" may be safe steps for the company but I hope they are working on bigger things.

I can be quite critical of Faro, but I disagree with this. I think their scanners are fine and arguably the most flexible.3DForensics wrote: ↑Fri Jun 18, 2021 4:00 pm FARO needs to come up with a new scanner. They are way behind on this as far as I am concerned.
Their software stack on the other hand needs some major investment though, and I don't mean just buying other companies.

This is why we use a Faro S150 and process in Cyclone (although that does have it's own issues).jedfrechette wrote: ↑Sat Jun 19, 2021 8:51 am I can be quite critical of Faro, but I disagree with this. I think their scanners are fine and arguably the most flexible.
