Sample data from BLK2 fly Available

I still don't see how this noisy data is useful. The level of detail is terrible.

From an architects point of view... this looks amazing, and accurate enough for the amount of precision we need... :?

Just had a quick look here in SCC and the raw E57 data seems quite sharp for an aerial LIDAR solution. Pretty crisp in both 3D and using a thin section with decent intensity returns. Not seeing much noise though the uneven data but the BLK2Fly scan pattern much like that of the BLK2Go can make the data appear worse than it is at first glance. On a horizontal slice 20mm thick I'm seeing about 10mm-15mm accuracy, which is on the high end for handheld SLAM and excellent for aerial SLAM.

As I mentioned before, I would dread being asked to create a 3D CAD model from this data. What would the deliverable be for data this noisy ? What can you offer to your clients ?

Mike.
Hi Mike,

Can you quantify what you mean by noise in this instance with a couple of specific examples from the data set? The data is sparse in places, and the fact that the scan lines aren't parallel make it look a bit messy, but I wouldn't consider the data noisy. By noise, I'm referring to points in the scan data that either don't appear to represent points on the ground or are significantly displaced from them.

I took a minute to roughly sketch some of the building detail to check how workable the data is and it seemed fine for aerial drone data. Not in any way comparable to what you'd get with an RTC360 or P40, but I don't think anyone's expecting that.
f5.jpg
I checked this by taking a 0.1m horizontal slice as shown below
f6.jpg
And having SCC automatically trace it. The extracted corners were in good agreement with the corresponding manually drawn vertical edges

With scanning, the devil is invariably in the detail. Looking at the extracted slice, I found 27mm of possible error over a 0.1m slice which could be registration related or noise. Could also be in part due to the irregularity of the surface over that thickness of slice. For reference, on a higher density more accurate static scanner such as the P40, I'd expect 2-3mm and be able use a 10mm slice.

It's horses for courses for sure, but the data quality from the BLK2Fly seems as good if not slightly better than the handheld BLK2go and also better than other similar drone mounted SLAM LIDAR solutions I've seen over the past couple of years. Not sure what the flight times are like, but there's a good argument for looping the building a second time in the opposite direction to increase data density. What I would love to see is the point cloud you'd get out if you chucked this data into the NavVis processing software. Possibly way better but that's pure speculation, don't know if any of the good folks at NavVis are following this thread but maybe they could oblige us if they get a few moments :)

I'm just curoius if they release the source files which come from the scanner not just test data, If a potential leica users would try to see how much time does it take to import, are there any pano photos like in the 2go, how much time to create those, etc...

Or at least release a *.lgs files with pano images, and 3d point cloud.
