Did you get an error on the scanner about turning off the compensator or lines out (cant remember the exact term it uses!)?

Re: P40 scan Pattern issues & Angle of Incidence
I have seen similar effects when using certain tripods. It could be down to harmonic vibration.
I have also had scans go a bit weird when setting up right next to a light pole or traffic light pole. I believe that there is some electrical or magnetic disturbance sometimes.

If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

No errors that I know of, but I wasn't behind the scanner that day

Re: P40 scan Pattern issues & Angle of Incidence
I can confirm that. We also had those effects on a 4-meter tripod, which was on a trolley. The tripod began to vibrate, when the trolley was not fixed very tight.Matt Young wrote: ↑Thu Feb 06, 2020 8:46 am I have seen similar effects when using certain tripods. Re: P40 scan Pattern issues & Angle of Incidence
I've seen far too many scans like that over the years.
They are full of errors, look for a straight wall and you will see ondulations everywhere.
Expectedly they are amplified with distance.
If you try to mesh multiple scans you end up with very nasty artifacts everywhere.
No amount of DAC'ing or targets will fix that and it is not picked up by the levelness watchdog,
On a P-series only a heavy duty wood tripod will do in my book.
Remember that sound waves are waves too, and will oscillate the scanner, a hollow legged tripod will be only too happy to resonate along.

Re: P40 scan Pattern issues & Angle of Incidence
Hello Steve, gsisman wrote: ↑Wed Feb 05, 2020 2:36 pm Has anyone seen this problem with P series Leica scanners?
We have our own BLK360 scanner that we've used for Intersection surveys and yesterday we had access to a consultants P40 scanner on a larger intersection that I wanted to experiement with on extended range and control scans (i.e. Dual axis compensated) to use as a base for fill in BLK360 scans.
We got some weird patterns in the scans. We also scanned right after rain which really eliminated the pavement distance because of reflection. Our amgle of incidence with the pavement was pretty oblique because we couldn't get RDP lite on either Android or iPAD to communicate with the scanner even after following detailed Leica manuals on the setup
1. Has anyone an idea what caused the striation?
2. Does the angle of incidence increase the number of returns significantly on wet blacktop or concrete pavement
1. No idea on cause. I have had odd things happen with P series, C-10 and the old Scan Station.
Overhead electric transmission lines has caused unusual operation as well as wind vibration at airports and vehicle vibration on bridges.
It's hard to narrow down what was causing that effect. I would check to see how it acted in another environment to help rule out some of the guesswork.
2. YES!!! Angle of incidence matters a lot on blacktop. Wet blacktop is horrible to scan.
I got RDP loaded up on our C-10 to do scans from our Nedo tripod along highways. I loaded it on an iPad and an Android tablet. (the iPad is my preference do to your ability to control how big the remote desktop display is) Getting the scanner 10 to 17 feet up makes a huge difference in how far you can get data on macadam. (Our range was about 100 feet) Above 20 feet high it would go out of Level do to wind buffeting. The Directions I found where less then optimum. It took about 3 hours of fiddling with it to get it working the first time. In the field once you got setting right it took 30 seconds or so to hook up and connect. I used a Windy 31 USB network adapter and the directions said the user and password where optional, I could not get it to work without all four setting shown.
I have scanned wet macadam and could barley get 30 feet with a C-10 set at 7 foot on a regular tripod.

Regarding RDP Lite; When I have used it on my Android Phone, the first time I set it up there was a setting along the lines of "Use Mobile Data if Wifi connection drops/slows down". When that was enabled, the RDP App would not work, with it disabled it connected and operated fine.

Re: P40 scan Pattern issues & Angle of Incidence
Both devices I used have both Cellular & Wifi. We ran into troubles before with the RTC360 & BLK with the whole mobile data vs WIFI thing.BrendanL wrote: ↑Wed Feb 12, 2020 5:05 am Regarding RDP Lite; When I have used it on my Android Phone, the first time I set it up there was a setting along the lines of "Use Mobile Data if Wifi connection drops/slows down". This time initially I thought that may be the problem, but when I disabled cellular on both and it still didn't work and gave me an error message.
I'm going out this morning to another site and try again (Same P40)
I did get both manuals for RDP use from my Leica Scan Rep

Re: P40 scan Pattern issues & Angle of Incidence
Yeah that's not a great tripod for a big heavy sucker like the P40. The more you elevate it the more it will move with every little movement of the legs. A good set of wooden ones with well spread legs would have been better, because the movement of the leg doesnt create a pendulum effect. Think of it like this, you if hold a sledge hammer up vertical by the non hammer end it will wobble around pretty bad, but if you hold it by the hammer end it will be pretty steady.
