Cyclone Register 360 BLK Edition Training

Post by smartscanz »

Hey guys,

Wondering what any of you would recommend when it comes to training for the Cyclone Register 360BLK Edition software as well as the Cyclone Field 360 App for the Ipad?
Any courses? Online or in Person?
Most of the stuff on Youtube is quite dated.

Anything would be appreciated. Located in Canada. Eh!

Thanks.

i think what you can find on youtube is more than enough for basic operations and the rest could be found out later. The reg360 is a very easy to learn by yourself.
(andy fontana's video for registration etc)

if you have valid CCP then you can find training material on leica myworld as well. And i'm sure if you call your sales representative then you can arrange an on person training as well, but as i said the reg360 is very easy to learn.

And the field app is like 1-2 button and you can find videos on youtube as well.

Loads of traps in regiser360.... It is working through many scenarios... The training and YouTube will let you get something out the door on small projects... (But not always successfully) When you get into the hundreds and thousands of scans, well the story changes, and there is no suitable training or YouTube... So many variables and methodologies on larger projects.

As for Field360 app... Well I have used the BLK360 since first release, and been using Cyclone since the SS2 era, and Register360 since its release in 2017. The Field App we hardly utilize in any way, shape or form. We use it only for a few very particular circumstances. And then shut off the app and go to strictly Push Button Scanning. If you look at the majority of issues people have, it is with the App... So guess what. Just don't use the app and make your life simple.

i don't think there are lot of traps you do the same over and over again on a large project what you do in a tiny one. the only thing is that you need to pay attention to connect everything (all entrances,stairs,etc...) and do a lot of truslice (in all direction) before export. (yes we did several project larger then 1700-1800 setup. our biggest so far is around 6700 setup. which are divided into 5 group if i recall correctly.)

as for field i can agree with you. currently we are working on a project which requires addotional photos (geotags). that is why we use it but only for rtc360 (because it transfer the images back to the rtc so don't need to download through mobile device).

Hey guys,

Appreciate all the tips as far as it goes for learning Cyclone Register 360 BLK Edition. Entering the field in 3D scanning with no experience is a bit overwhelming. I guess I will give the YouTube videos another try.
Perhaps call one of the reps and see what they can offer as far as it goes for hands on learning.
What was your experience as far as it goes for learning? Turn on the unit and figure it out? LoL?

Thanks. :)

yep that is what we did exactly. with the blk its 1 button set the resolution to medium ldr and forget it. after that just push the button and thats all what happens in the field. you just make sure that you have enough overlap between the scans (1 corner with surrounding walls visible at least on both of the scans).

of course not optimal but for indoor scan this is good for most of the case.

if you get some experience you can use different resolutions for the different cases. (outdoor high res, indoor big room middle, indoor small rooms small res)

of course if you not use field360 then you will need to register the scans in the office. that way you will need to align the scans manually in most of the case.

import only 20-25 setup/sitemap (autocloud, smart align) so the autocloud will not try to find links unnecessary.

PS: if you have specific question then ask it maybe we could help you in your journey.

Arrange a 1-2-1 session with a Leica trainer - you can specify exactly what you want to learn

OR

Join the Leica e-learning courses here: https://learning.leica-geosystems.com/login/index.php - It's mainly focussed on REG360 (not BLK Edition) but they are near identical apart from the data imports. If you have a CCP, these courses are free of charge.

OR

Use the in-built assistant tool... it will give you a good start!

OR

USe Andy Fontana's videos in YouTube

OR

... no, I cannot think of any more...

I say traps, because I can give the Identical data set to 20 different people to register, and I'll get 20 different final PointClouds. There are critical methods to assembling larger and larger bundles, and how you brace your links. Sometimes to lock certain aspects, sometimes to not, do I hole this bundle and build this direction, or go another way... Even between Cyclone and Register360 with the same data, and same person you'll often see 2 different results.

Yes the Visual Alignment, Run C2C, Optimize, and repeat, repeat, repeat etc is repetition. But how those links are built and those larger bundle assemblies take place change the results. Of course Tru Slicer is always the best friend. Also field methods play a huge role, but the Field is much simpler than the Registration. Can train basically anyone to get the scans, may be over scanned, but that is ok, as there is no such thing as too much data. Like I say, I can take that identical field data and give it to 20 different people to register, and I'll have 20 completely different PointCloud solutions. And everyone says well Targets... And yes certain scenarios Targets are good. But that being said, I have seen many bad pointclouds as they force a PointCloud to fit the Survey Coordinates of the Targets, but there is were errors in the Survey... Seen many C2C Regos that were perfect, and then the user applied survey control and skewed the cloud because the Survey was wrong... Sometimes you need lock the bundle before applying Targets. Sometimes you don't... So yes, it takes time to learn how to build out your bundles, assemble those larger bundles, how and when you are going to apply the Targets, or perhaps you are just going to use the UCS tool and force it to match to match a vector and Floor Elevation. Many little details and traps when you start getting in more and more disciplines from Mining, to Civil to Buildings to Factories, to Marine Vessels, and are the vessels in water or on Dry Dock.... All scenarios require different solutions So yes, the basics of Visual Alignment, C2C match, Optimize and check with TruSlicer kind of remain more or less the same. But the more scan stations you have, the more variable methods there are available to assemble and build those final PC bundles. And also the more potential to have something go wrong.

That is 100% true. And i'm sure if you say only one person to assemble the same data 20 times you get different results every time. The registration will differ here and there.

as for survey, or UCS that is i think is a project dependency and should be discussed with the client. What are the requirements for the project and independent to project size. And how you apply that is an another story yes.

Field can be critical i've sent several times the group back because there were no sufficent overlap between scans.

yep finding errors missing links in a large bundle can be hard. it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack. it needs time and pratice to point out/fix issues and missing links. But the video or trainer will not help in that, because of the limited timeframe.

you didn't mentioned cleaning but that is an another story how you clean. You have different options, by setup or bundle, c2c points or visual or both. There are a software bugs with cleaning. Some of them are resolved in 2021, but new one gets released.

Didn't mention cleaning as unless it affects the registration, I in principal never really clean anything, outside a few of the most simple operations. Cleaning can be a very expensive operation for no reward. Any modeler worth a quarter their salary can model a messy point cloud, just as well as a cleaned pointcloud.

Hosting PointClouds and Cleaning PointClouds are 2 very expensive items, that unless absolutely requested can be a very big waste of money. Hosting a model is reasonable. But hosting a PointCloud is really a waste.. Better off capturing a matterport or struciton site capture while scanning, and hosting it, instead of the pointcloud. And the photo quality from the Matterport Pro2 is so superior to any scanner. Or use other camera systems and host on Cupix Homes.
