Looking for recommendation
Hi everyone,
I would like to get your thoughts on which tool we could use to replace Recap in registering large amount of scans in a single project. We use Faro X330 and Recap to process the scans, however Recap seems to struggle when it comes to big projects like more than a 100 or so. Especially when you start cleaning out unwanted points.
I hope you guys can recommend an alternative that can handle large amount of data. Thanks in advance and have a good day.

Re: Looking for recommendation
if you are using Faro, it is better to use Scene, this is what I use and is working well for me.

Personally I use Cyclone for all point clouds that need to be registered regardless of what machine collected the data.
I have been using Cyclone for registration since 2004 and it works every time. I have also registered many hundreds of scans together using targets and Cloud to Cloud techniques in one large database.

Hi Jose,
We are using Trimble RealWorks. This is a great program for any size project. Our biggest project to date is +-3000 setups, but we had to split the project in 4 to reduce the size. The Trimble support and interface is really good.
We are mainly processing Faro and Riegl scans using TRW and exporting to Revit or Bentley.
Cheers Danie

Hi,
if you works with targets, which make sense by bigger number of scans, you can use the registration tools of pointcab software.
www.pointcab-software.com
The nice think in pointcab is, that it has a very good adjustment workflow, specially if you combine scandata and totalstation data.
Also the combination of different resource from scanner or other device, like mobile scanner and drone pointcloud are working well.
My expierence people can collect 100 scans perfect in 2 to 2,5 hours, if the dataset and reference points location good.

Re: Looking for recommendation
I agree that typically using native software to register scan data works best in my opinion. Having used Cyclone/Scene/recap. Leica data is better in its own environment (Cyclone) as is faro data (in Scene).
Scene works well for us especially when you are only dealing with 100 scans.
A large project for us would be in excess of 750+ scans and scene is fine with that.
In fact the largest set we had was 3000+ scans all in one scene project.

Re: Looking for recommendation
I really appreciate all the replies, thank you. The largest project we had was around 800 scans. And Recap just struggles to handle it.
I was able to use Faro Scene's trial for quite some time. We love it to be honest. Our only comment is that we find it quite difficult to navigate around the point cloud when cleaning out noise. Or maybe I just don't know the all the controls yet..
As for Trimble Realworks, I was able to install the latest trial version but it asked for a trial license when I opened it. I might need to contact a local supplier to get that sorted.
We'd like to give Cyclone a try and see how it differs from the others. I'd really appreciate if someone could give me a direct link to its trial version.
Thank you so much to all your insights.. Have a good week!!

Jose,
Navigating in SCENE in the Examine mode is best but even easy with a 3D mouse in your left hand and a regular mouse in the other. Only 150USD too.
I love mine!
