Scantra

Post by landmeterbeuckx »

Hi,
Any Scantra users out here. I'd like to drop scene for registering fls files and am looking for alternatives.

Pros and cons are appreciated.

Hi Lieven

You might consider trying Vercator software, I'd be interested to know how you find it:

Importing and exporting FLS data between packages has been very slow in my experience. You might want to check how that affects your workflow and tweak as needed.

Hi David,
I didn't know about Vercator, and had a look at the website.

Here they are a couple of questions:

why the software import E57 but doesn't export in the same format?
the .ply exported format is textual or binary?
what's the size of a .ply file compared to the original .fls imported?
are you planning to allow the importation of native Z+F .zfs files? (Z+F has API available for this)
are you planning the automatic exportation in RCP/RCS Recap format?

I'm waiting the link to download the software to give it a try.
Bye

Hi David,

I've checked out the youtube video but i see you've got to pair the scans manually. With 200 scans projects it's impossible to know which ones overlap. Is this the only way to go?

Maybe, but not as slow as trying to save and register in scene itself ;)

Hi Sersab,

In response to your your questions:

Q: Why the software import E57 but doesn't export in the same format?
A: These are our current development priorities, but we are working on this for our Intergeo release along with LAS/LAZ.

Q: The .ply exported format is textual or binary?
A: Both are supported by Vercator Desktop Software.

Q: What's the size of a .ply file compared to the original .fls imported?
A: An fls of 120mb is about 665mb in binary PLY and LAS, 90 mb in LAZ.

Q: Are you planning to allow the importation of native Z+F .zfs files? (Z+F has API available for this)
A: If users ask for this and nit is deemed there is enough pull, then yes. We would be very interested in your feedback when you have trialled our software. We are aware of the API.

Q: Are you planning the automatic exportation in RCP/RCS Recap format?
A: Again, yes, if users ask for it. We would be interested in your thoughts when you have trialled our software. We are aware of the API.

Q: I've checked out the youtube video but i see you've got to pair the scans manually. With 200 scans projects it's impossible to know which ones overlap. Is this the only way to go?

A: Manual intervention is required as it provides the most robust result, but we are working on automating it to improve this even further. The pairs are automatically created based on alphabetic file names, but this may need editing of course, based on how the scans were captured. However, it is unlikely all 200 would need editing in our experience.

It does require an understanding of how the scans were captured as full automation requires reasonable overlap to work. You can read more on our pairs https://correvate.atlassian.net/service ... +Selection.

I hope this goes some way towards satisfying your queries but do get in touch if you would like more info.

Best,
David

Hello

I try to raise this older post.

Yes, you can and should use Scantra. If you do not prefer a standalone version, just take a look for LupoScan. There you can get the Scantra-Integration inside. I know that the developers of LupoScan own a FARO Scanner and use Scantra always. The results are excellent.

We use Scantra out of LaserControl with a Z+F Imager. It raise up your registration performance a lot.

Hi,

I know, that few customer in Germany use Scantra too. Scantra has icp algorithm and network adjustment combined. A Scantra OEM is also used in same manufacture software as their registration tool. The fit plane in the point cloud and then the make the adjustment over the planes. The algorithm are the most advance on the market. The make succesfully test up to hundert of scans.

Unfortunately most producer don’t support them by directly import of their sdk. That is more politic, that most manufacture try to keep customer in their own software eco- system. You can use e57 for import and export it also about standard formats. Maybe the Scantra try to get sdk to recap in the future, too make it easier for autodesk users.

With further development of hardware, there is an disadvantage in 3d party programs, like Scantra. If the scanner use more different sensors (VIS, IMU, GPS..) for preregistration of scans, this information can`t be share automatically by e57 export. This preregistration information fit the most time consuming step in registration, find the neighborhood relation between the scans.

You should ask for a trial version.
