Scene vs Cyclone vs Recap
My organization is looking into 3d scanning for the first time and I'm having trouble finding real comparisons between the software that is more than just sales slogans (my-dog-is-bigger-than-your-dog kind of stuff), and industry bias towards Leica for accuracy that we don't particularly need for our projects.
We would be scanning areas with high density of fairly reflective stainless steel piping and equipment. Specific project in mind currently would be upwards of 200 scans.
Our main goal for the scan for us to be able to route pipe through the area with relative certainty that we are not clashing with existing tube/equipment. As long as we can tell within an inch or so where a tube is, that's good enough for us. Some modeling will be done, but that is not our primary aim.
We currently use AutoCAD Plant 3D for all our modeling/drafting and Recap PRO came along with the bundle. If Recap would work, we would rather not waste money on the other software, but are willing to purchase if there is sufficient value added.
Questions:
* What do Scene and Cyclone offer that Recap does not?
* What is the difference between Scene and PointSense? Cyclone Register and Cloudworx?
* What kind of specs would be required to run this kind of software? Scene rec'd specs are pretty outrageous as we were planning to do this on laptop in field with spare guy or in the hotel during the evenings.
* Is there an upper limit that each of these softwares can handle as far as # of scans?
Thanks for reading and answering!

Re: Scene vs Cyclone vs Recap
-To register your scans you need recap pro which isn't free. Scene offers all the yools to register the scans and export them for use in other programs. I haven't use the drawing or other functions in scene, just register and export. No experience with cyclone
-Pointsense is used to draw and model your scandata (can recommend it), scene as above
-i run intel core i7 with 64gb ram and high end video card. Use ssd for program software and separate ssd for data.
-there are folks who do 3000 and more scans but i'm limited to 400 (largest project) , this can be done but after registring you'll have to cut up the pointcloud in smaller sections for efficient use

Re: Scene vs Cyclone vs Recap
Only used Scene and Cyclone to register Faro & Leica scans - i would take Cyclone any day of the week over Scene. Its miles quicker, doesnt crash any where near as much and you dont have to wait for ages when loading/saving a project.
Scene is good for smaller projects where your registering the scans with speheres. One feature Scene does win on for me is you can batch export each registered scan world - Cyclone you need to do this manually.
Cyclones smart align is excellent as its visual alignment options to line up overlapping scans, can generate reports and its easy to visually qc the point cloud with quick slice tool and clipping box. Leica online chat for technical support is also really good, only down side is its not open at nights or weekends when your usually sat at your pc working!
Although im not using Jet Stream yet i cant see another product/option as good as this for a work flow from your registration software straight to your CAD software using Cloudworkx.
What scanner are you using - as depending on what your doing you might have to get the software that goes with your scanner..... as if you using Faro and taking imagery you need Scene to colour the scans, Cyclone cant do that. And i dont Cyclone can import an un-levelled scan and "level" it like Scene does (please correct me if im wrong with this / point me in the right direction to do this!)
edit - forgot to add i mainly process in field on a laptop coming up 2 years old, 32gb ram, i7, 3gb graphics and SSD drive : i would suggest you pay for at least 2tb SSD main drive and SSD second drive in the laptop and a bit more ram if your getting a larger laptop but everything i have chucked at it in Cyclones been fine, some 200+ scans with large project files. Its taken all of scene projects as well but crashes loads and taked ages saving/loading up!

Re: Scene vs Cyclone vs Recap
Might also be worth considering Register 360 if you're working on smaller jobs.
Will be released at the end of August in subscription and outright purchase options. If you invest in Cyclone Register and have a valid CCP (which you should have for 1 year minimum after purchase) then you can use both solutions, just not concurrently.
More information can be found here:

Register 360 I have seen running on a Surface Pro i5 with 16gb RAM...! Specs do not have to be HUGE.

Re: Scene vs Cyclone vs Recap
First question: what hardware are you going to use? Because before register you need to filter data (specially with stainless structure and pipes) so for sure the software to filter best the data is the same of the hardware (Z+F -> laser control; Faro -> scene; Leica -> cyclone and so on)
IMHO

Re: Scene vs Cyclone vs Recap
Thanks for the information! Sorry it took so long to reply. I thought the forum had rejected my post and didn't bother to check back until today.
We did end up doing the scanning. We used a Faro 130 and captured about 60 full color scans during the training trip. I processed and registered it all in Scene and exported to Recap Pro to take advantage of it's compatibility with other Autodesk Products.
I just completed the second trip in which I completed scanning the scope area (another 80 scans) and it is processing in Scene now. I'm using the free trial, so I hope I can finish before that expires.
I have been running the software on my PC with Xeon E5 1620 and only 16GB Ram. The CPU maxed about well before the RAM did. CPU stayed at 100%, but RAM hovered around 30-40%.
I only have one SSD around 480GB and can attest that this became an issue as the Scene and Recap Project used more than 130gb of that space. I noticed a huge reduction in performance when I got close to about 95% storage capacity. I moved a few things to an external drive and everything is running fine again with only about 85gb free.
I plan to use Recap to process and register the data over from raw scans when I get some down time and will report back comparing my experiences with Recap and Scene.
Thanks again!

Re: Scene vs Cyclone vs Recap
Hi Guys,
A little to reply but this is what I found out.
I have used Cyclone, ReCap and Scene and will stand by cyclone any day, but there are other factors like project size, cost, turn around time to be considered. I am thoroughly impressed with ReCap for a medium sized project.
Check out the snaps from Autodesk website.

Hello mate, Cyclone lets you import FLS scans if that helpssteves01x wrote: ↑Wed Jun 28, 2017 8:39 am Only used Scene and Cyclone to register Faro & Leica scans - i would take Cyclone any day of the week over Scene. Re: Scene vs Cyclone vs Recap
yes but faro scans are not levelled when you import them directly and i have never been able to export a "levelled" scan from Scene either! There must be a solution!

Re: Scene vs Cyclone vs Recap
Hi,
Well i remember if you right click on the scans in the navigator it has an option called toggle level scan maybe that is the solution...not really sure will try next week.
