Onshape review - web based 3D modeler

Post by max72 » Mon Jul 16, 2018 2:53 pm

I would like signal a very nice tool, completely web based, and with some little limitations free.
www.onshape.com

It is a mechanical cad modeler, Solidworks style.
I use this kind of modelers to create parts to be 3D printed.
I purchased Alibre license in the past but with all the property changes and the money spent I decided to abandon it. I had an Inventor license too, not available anymore.
Anyway I consider this kind of tools the perfect fit for 3D printing and rapid prototyping. While I have Rhino it's not the best fit for this kind of work, in my opinion.

Onshape is very nice, and offers a free option, only the models are public. There are other limitations with the free account, but the extra features offered with paid accounts are tailored for big groups and projects, so nothing is really missing.

Combining it with a 3D printer offers the possibility to customize and create dedicated parts to streamline the workflow (considering also you can have a decent 3D printer kit for less than 200$...)
