Hi
We used to use pointools before they were aquired by Bentley and now we are using Undet plugin to Autocad.
The plugin works from version 2014 & is great for 2D and 3D workflows.
Aurelijus and the Undet team are on the forum and have their own area on the board index. They can also be found at undet.com where videos of the application can be seen. They were recently at the Faro European user conference and also at GeoWorld. Worth a look

I heard that autocad 2016 can do this... however before you get half of these solutions installed or learned you could drawn it in an hour. Usually most of the semiauto solutions require too much cleanup or false positive solutions. If anyone is going to have the magic bullet someday... it will be Edgewise btw.

So many fascinating development research projects here.
I can see that the primitive shape extraction appears to be directly implemented into Geomagic Design X (Regions). Looks like an exact copy pretty much.
