I am testing Briscad for Point Cloud. Although so far, I quite like it, I do have some issues that makes me think I should stick with AutoCAd.
Import of point cloud
I still have to go through recap and Briscad has to re-process it adding about 40 minutes.
I can't get the E57 to work.
The PTX files take forever and end up in the wrong place.
Copy of point Cloud
Can you have the same point cloud twice (in a different place) in one single drawing?
Preprocessed pointcloud
Where does Briscad saved the pointcloud so I can save it and move on another PC?
Thanks a lot,
Sandrine

Hello, I'm using Bricscad but not the native fonction for the point clouds. It's not really powerful I think. I'm using Cloudworx Basic, it's really fast and really cheap. Bricscad pro + Cloudworx basic is still cheaper than AutoCAD alone.

Hi Sandrine,
JonMag is right. Cloudworx is a great and easy way of using the point cloud in Bricscad.
Let me send you a separate message to discuss in more deteil

Re: Briscad and Point Cloud
Have Hexagon not purchased BricsCAD, or at least the producer of it? Are there any planned updates to incorporate point clouds into BricsCAD or any features on the horizon?

Re: Briscad and Point Cloud
Did you try to import LAS instead of ReCap or PTX? It works quite fast, for at least what I've tried with.

Yes LAS worked well for me to import, was fairly quick but not a large file.
And I agree for now Cloudworx in Brics is much easier.

Re: Briscad and Point Cloud
Hi,
Thank you for sharing the tutorial. I neither use any of this tools but rather focus on capture fast and comprehensive pointclouds, it look realy easy to use BricsCAD and model with it.
Regards
Veit

Re: Briscad and Point Cloud
Import of point cloud
If I have registered a point cloud with Recap I will export a unified .rcs cloud file and import it into Bricsys.
It is smaller and faster in Bricscad. Full .rcp point clouds don't give any added value in Bricscad except a very rudimentary bubble view.
Bricscad does not have the function that Autocad has to switch on and off individual scans.
If I have registered with something else than Recap I will export a unified e57 cloud, or a unified PTX cloud.
Copy of point Cloud
Can you have the same point cloud twice (in a different place) in one single drawing?
Yes that is possible. Just select the cloud and copy like any drawing element.
Preprocessed pointcloud
Where does Briscad saved the pointcloud so I can save it and move on another PC?
You will find the path in Manage/Settings/Point Cloud Settings/Disk Cache Folder
Further thoughts:
We switched from Autocad to Bricscad for cost reasons. Generally Bricscad works quite well and it is very compatible with Autocad, with some exceptions, notably dynamic blocks and point cloud handling.
Autocad has a nice slicing tool for point clouds that is very useful for producing floor plans, for example.
Bricscad's tools are different and not as handy in my opinion.
Bricscad on the other hand accepts several point cloud formats besides rcp.
Note however that if you create a dwg with Bricscad with a reference to a non-rcp format point cloud, Autocad will crash when opening the file.
Rcp or rcs references are fine, though.
