Best software to model pipe, deliver in Bentley OpenPlant

Post by RyanT »

We've been tasked with scanning a number of oil/gas facilities and creating accurate 3D models. Pipe runs, fittings, flanges, etc. We've done this in the past using the Faro As-Built software and working in AutoCAD Plant3D. However, this time our engineers and finally the client need deliverables in Bentley OpenPlant. We still have access to As-Built, so that is preferred for budget reasons, but if we can save time I'd like to see what my options are.

Is it possible to go from Faro As-Built to a Bentley product? Are there better Bentley compatible options? Is there any cheaper or opensource software available to achieve this?

I appreciate any thoughts on this! Thanks in advance

Ryan,
I think some key things are missing in your your question:
1) what software version does your client need? v8i? Connect edition?
2) does he need an editable model? or a view only model will work?
3) how does he want to use the BIM model? what for?

until these answers are in place, you have a HUGE opportunity to under-deliver or over-deliver.

Full disclosure: we are a BIM integrator delivering digital twins based on Bentley and Autodesk stack. BIM Machine has completed 8 factories using Bentley software and is among early adopter companies testing iModels. Believe me, the recipe that worked for us was: 1) asking WHAT is needed? 2) thinking HOW to achieve this / what tools to use. I understand you want to save a buck, but do you have a full picture view?

We'll be working in Connect. The model needs to editable for use in new design

Probably Lieca Cyclone model may be a good option.

Thanks Peyman,

I have some experience modeling in Cyclone, but it's been a few years. How does modeling in Cyclone compare to Edgewise, As-Built, other platforms? Does the Cyclone model contain any "smart" information like an ASME spec or similar? Is there a part library or does it just do a best-fit to the point cloud?

One Bentley issue is you may find is the work perfect in your chosen software, export to a "friendly" format and stuff may not come through properly. There can be enough fiddly issues just going from Micro Station to AutoCad so i dread to think of the complex issues when it comes to an intelligent pipe heavy model!

I have tried Edgewise and if you have a good machine it will auto extract a lot of the pipes!

You will probably want to be sitting down when you get a price for Cyclone Model and Bentley though

Duy Nguyen,

Thank you for the reply, though it does not look like TerraSolid would be useful for this application. I do not see anything about pipe extraction on their website. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I would interested to know if anyone else out there is using Bentley Descartes in this way. Most of what I've found searching the internet is older and I assume outdated. To me it seems like a good tool for land surveying with point clouds, and not so much for pipe. I would be very interested to know if Descartes could be a solution for accurate and time-saving oil/gas pipe extraction.

Thanks again
