Scan to CAD options

Post by adriantaylor09 »

Hey everyone,

I'm look for some help in choosing the right scan-to-cad software for some upcoming projects.

Until now, we have been using Geomagic design x and Autodesk Inventor, which is brilliant for modelling one off features and mechanical items, however we are about to start on a few projects that require a more automated workflow. We are particularly interested in modelling structural steel elements like beams, angle, channel etc. As well as piping runs, like flanges, valves elbows etc.

I know that Cyclone does a fantastic job of this, and for the first time, I'm slightly jealous of all you Leica folk out there! But unfortunately, it's a little out of our price range right now.

We ran Kubit PointSense Plant for a while before getting InfiPoints. Other than Clear Edge, InfiPoints is the only software package out there that I'm aware of that performs automatic pipe and plane extraction. Steel modeling is still semi-automatic, so it is on par with Kubit there.

We also use Design X with InfiPoints to model out equipment from a mesh or pointcloud clipping box export where no drawings or models are provided by the client.

The nice thing about InfiPoints is that it allowed us to replace FARO SCENE, Kubit, AutoCad (with its 10 crashes per day), and whatever you use for videos/viewers/travel path/collison checking. With a lot less time spent going from lsproj-rcp-dwg/etc... we save a ridiculous amount of time and can complete giant projects that would have never been feasible to do modeling on before.

For example, the piping and planes from a 272 scan project were extracted in about an hour and 15 minutes.

Anyways, two options for automatic extraction, Clear Edge 3D, and InfiPoints. Clear Edge 3D is probably an addition to your workflow, InfiPoints is pretty much a one-stop-shop replacement for your workflow. We still need to keep Design X for our Faro EDGE ScanArm, so I'm removing that from my one-stop-shop statement :p

Adrian,

I try not to do sales pitches here but for the steel elements our CloudWorx for AutoCAD has some great features for that, if you have AutoCAD. Also, you can buy what we call a Time-limited license of Cyclone (rental) starting from one week on up to a year which can be a cost effective way to apply the technology to a specific project and maybe end up justifying a purchase if the workflows are efficient enough.

Thanks for the response Tommy, looks like infipoints is pretty comprehensive. Will definitely look into that.

Clear edge also looks promising
