3D Solid comparison with Point Cloud

Post by formbysurveys »

Anyone got any suggestions as to the best way to compare a 3D solid AutoCAD design model with an as-built point cloud and report of the "differences" between the 2?

Many ways to do this. polyworks, reshaper, cloudcompare (free).

A new software just launched, http://skur.com/. Looks like it may be a really good solution. check it out.

Thanks Thad

I thought CC would only compare between clouds not a cloud and "something else"? Can it produce a Isopachye between the 2 data sets?

Happy to get you a demo of 3D Reshaper Andy, it will do just this. Cyclone Survey can also compare between a mesh and points, but depends on the model. Reshaper is also a little better on the reporting side in terms of PDF inspection reports with a logo etc.

Hi Paul

The two data sets are a point cloud and an AutoCAD solid model (not a mesh). Was hoping to avoid conversion and data types if I can. Everything is on grid, I just simply want to compare the 2 datasets and see the difference.

Hi,
You will be able to import dwg/dxf files in reshaper too...
Should create a surface which you can compare to your point cloud...

We've used 3d reshaper for comparing ground surfaces to a mesh and the reporting is nice. I would imagine it would be similar with solid model.

I wouldn't muck around and would go straight to POLWORKS
