meshes subtraction

Post by dante.abate »

Hi all

i need to subtract two mesh one from the other.
Basically i have 2 models of the same object.
One is raw with holes while the other one is watertight.
I need to obtain the added polygons (hole filling) as stand alone fly (geometry). Any ideas?
I tried with boolean operators but it looks like they want 2 watertight meshes.

Thanks a lot for any help!

I would investigate Meshmixer. There is a very active meshmixer forum, with some power users.
Otherwise Rhino comes to mind.

The boolean operators in CloudCompare (Cork plugin) need two watertight meshes. If you need to make it water tight the most user friendly software is Autodesk ReMake, but depending on how many holes you have it might be too time consuming.

I can't imagine a boolean operator (that is accurate) on meshes that doesn't need water tight meshes. Unless you can find one in Meshmixer or Meshlab that subtracts the watertight from the one with holes.

Best of luck!

Hi,
In 3dreshaper, the workflow I would suggest is the following one:
  1. extract the holes of the mesh ( polylines)
  2. project the polylines onto the watertight mesh
  3. run the constraint meshing, it will cut the watertight mesh along the projected polylines and separate each individual part
Do not hesitate to download 3dreshaper from our website and ask for a trial version
