What software to use to get from Kinect to sketchup?

Post by Tomc1496 »

Sorry if this is in the wrong section, I'm a new guy here (hello! :P )

I was using my Kinect as a very cheap 3D scanner, but was wondering was there any software that I could use to get a 3D drawing onto sketchup as in currently struggling and getting nowhere with it and can't find anything on it that helps me.

I only want it on there to model up against some cupboards/shapes and then use the 3D scanned part to trim the back off if that makes sense?

Thanks a lot guys! :)

Hi Tom and welcome to the forum,

Trimble RealWorks (TRW) has a plugin for SketchUp that could solve the problem.

This is a video showing how to use the plugin with Terrestrial Laser Scanning data. In your case, you would need to import your Kinect data to TRW as a 3D point cloud:

Hope this helps.

Hi Andrés,

Thanks for responding so quickly! I'm currently using Kscan3D software and the only export options I get are
.3d3
.asc
.obj
.ply
.stl
.fbx

So how can I get it to export to a file that will work with trw? Is there any software you or someone else could recommend?

Sorry to be a pain! Thanks a lot :)

Hi again Tom,

You can import (among others) ASCII files such as .asc or .ply in TRW

I don't know another software doing the job, maybe someone else in the forum could answer.

Regards and good luck! :)

So I have downloaded the Trimble scan explorer extension as it looks spot on for what I want. However when I go to open a file it says that it wants to import it using "Trimble RealWorks files" which I am struggling to do/get anything to convert it to.

So I have a in total 28 ASC11 Files (.asc) that I cannot get to import (as they aren't Trimble RealWorks Files) directly onto scan explorer.

So then I downloaded Trimble Realworks Viewer with the hope that I can import it as a .asc file (which I can) and then export it into a format I can get to work on scan explorer. My issue lies with I can't seem to export any files from Realworks Viewer. At the top left I have a bit that says "import/export" but it will only let me import and I can't seem to find anyway to export. I really have little to no clue with 3d scanning as this is my very first attempt, so I am sorry that these are probably simple issues I'm having and I know its totally my fault, but if anyone knows how I can get around this I would be very grateful! Thanks a lot.

You can use this for importing/exporting STLs with SketchUp: https://extensions.sketchup.com/en/content/sketchup-stl

Hi,
Working with sketchup reveal one lack of most software ... interoperability of data files.
So you need more than one software to accomplish "data" exchange.
In fact I'm sometime using "Meshmixer" to export some Collada (dae) sketchup compatible file, 3DS format work maybe a bot better.
Sometime it works, sometime it wont.

Have a look here http://www.meshmixer.com/

"Blender" can be of some help also to convert file format. https://www.blender.org/

hope it's help.

If you want to work with point cloud data directly in SketchUp, Undet for SketchUp is a great option. Please see below for a video of the workflow with DotProduct DPI-8X handheld scan data:
