Artec Studio 10 - Geodesic distance

Post by Nikobala »

Hey folks,

I'm using the Artec Spider together with Artec Studio 10. For my studies I use the "Geodesic distance" measurement tool. In short it measures the distance over the surface. But it doesn't really do this, instead the points for measurement are placed somewhere over of the structure (see attached image).
This means depending on which perspective I'm using, i get a different type of measurement results. Since the support doesn't seem to be helpfull, I'm asking you if there is an solution or another software I could use.

Thank you :)

Hello Nils,

As far as I checked, our team has analyzed 3D model that you shared with us and advised to use another measurement type instead of geodesic which is not recommended in this case (ticket ID 11322, June 29).
Could you please specify what exactly was considered as not helpful?

Thank you very much for assistance.

Sounds like Artec is helping you out but to answer your question...

You could use 3ds Max. Creat a slice through the surface where you want to measure. I think you can then select the segments you want and create a shape/spline from that. You can then read out the total length of the line using the measure tool.

Hi All,

Saying that it can't be done via geodesic measurement in Artec Studio 10 does not mean we won't check other options. Unfortunately, sometimes it takes more time than originally expected to find the solution and I am sorry if it is a non-acceptable delay in replying or if there is some activity in parallel email conversation which does not appear at the forum.
(In my own defense, I should say that I have not noticed dozens of advice posted in this forum thread except the one about 3D Max :D )

Originally I intended to discuss the results with Nils internally via email, but if needed, I'll be glad to share them here using similar 3D model.

Hi All,

Just a short update about this issue since I mentioned that I'd share the way to apply such measurements once I find it. Maybe it will be helpful if anybody else on this forum needs to measure similar dimensions.

I used GOM Inspect software: http://www.gom.com/3d-software/gom-insp ... nload.html

Sequence of actions:
1) Import your STL file via File --> Import ---> Target element: Mesh.
2) Select File --> Construct --> Curve --> Surface Curve.
3) Hold CTRL + LMB and click on the surface. It will add the point of your curve - add as many points as you need. Click "Create and Close" when you finish placing points.
4) Select your Curve1 in the left part of the screen and choose Inspection --> Check dimension ---> Other --> Curve length.
5) System will create a label with curve length.

Pictures showing step-by-step process:

Note: I used a sample 3D model of orchid captured with Artec Spider which is shown on all screenshots.

Hope it helps.

Hey folks,

Just wanted to point out that Artec did a great job supporting me with my measurements. :)
I'm currently trying out the options proposed to me and will give an feedback when I'm done how it worked out.

Thanks to you as well 3DForensics :)
