Very cool! I find it interesting that we now have at least 3 scanners that are in this same low-cost, low-accuracy range. Can anyone tell me if 30mm in a single scan is reasonable for most AEC projects? Where else would a scanner like this be useful for you?

What about a low cost Surphaser? Higher accuracy with clean data...just saying.

I guess like most scanning choices, it depends on the project.
In addition to the project, the stage of the project is probably the most important factor in deciding acceptable accuracy.

For detail design or fabrication, very unlikely that 30mm would be OK.
For feasibility 30mm would be way more than is needed - The question comes though of smart procurement of scanning at early stages with a forethought of detail design and beyond later on.
Even if the data has been captured in advance at a decent accuracy, does not necessarily mean that people working on the project at different stages later on will even be aware that the data exists.

It's all about Better Information Management. (totally stolen from Dr. Anne Kemp from many years ago!)

I'm very interested to see what sort of projects people use these types of scanners for. This and the BLK360, LasIris.

For the majority of work we see, 1mm-5mm is the typical range of accuracies requested. Maybe +/-10mm for building surveys.
So 30mm accuracy which is typical for the new breed of low cost scanners appears a bit loose for typical uses, but there must be a demand for these systems of they won't be getting made. Looking forward to seeing what they end up doing!

I like the 360 x 360 field of view and the minimum scanning distance of 100mm.

IMO the BLK is not in the same breath as the other scanners. Its better.

Interesting scanner, be cool if it had a little slick registration software.

It depends. Its better than nothing (even if your 1 foot off you still see piping, ducts, etc...). But for MOST applications you need to be close to reality if your going to use the data. We are still researching the boundaries ourselves.

I'm almost certain that all of the product images showing this scanner are CG bullshots, so I'm not sure we can take for granted that it is getting made quite yet. ;)

It seems like the trick with any of these low res scanner will be accurately registering the data together. It's one thing to have data with a precision of only 3 cm, but if that low precision also makes it difficult to accurately align multiple scans and cover any significant area then that is a much bigger problem. Of course, you can mitigate the low scanner accuracy by adding more sensors or smarter software, but that won't necessarily be cheap.

With the angular resolution 0.25° at max distance range 20m you'll get a grid with points spaced at 87mm. That would mean quite a lot of setups with a tripod based system to sufficiently cover anything larger than a standard room.

I have their spec sheet which is non-specific on wifi and HDR, which can be and are current problems with other sensor systems.
