Testing and Review of the DotProduct Scanner
Hello All,
I've been given an opportunity to test the DotProduct hand held scanner and over the coming days (maybe weeks), I would like to post some of my findings. I may have to create a video at some point, but I will start with a very quick scan that I did the other day.
My initial impressions are quite positive. More to follow...

Re: Testing and Review of the DotProduct Scanner
Did it come in as one point cloud? Did it bog down your tablet at all? The website says mm accuracy, can you confirm?
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Testing and Review of the DotProduct Scanner
I have the new nVidia Shield tablet and it did not bog down at all. It was in fact very fluid. This was one complete scan and in fairness I did not let the system warm up the whole way (was impatient). My plan is to run some accuracy tests and I will definitely report back to the group.

Eugene,
Can you tell me the length of time that the scan took?
Thanks

Re: Testing and Review of the DotProduct Scanner
Maybe a minute? Not much longer than that. Also, I Iost tracking on one or two occasions and just moved back to a previous position and it started scanning again. Still, it was relatively quick for me.

Re: Testing and Review of the DotProduct Scanner
Looks quite nice. Thanks for the post.
I'd be quite interested to see the shaded pointcloud without colors.
Colors can be quite deceiving when it comes to evaluating the level of detail/ noise.
Cheers!
p.s. browsing their webpage, I'm somewhat suprised they offer ptx as export format. Eugene, any insight on why?

Unshaded point clouds hide all manner of sins.

I can only imagine that PTX was a customer request for integration with other programs. I normally just stick with PTS or other formats.
I've added ambient occlusion in CloudCompare.

Re: Testing and Review of the DotProduct Scanner
Eugene, thanks for the images. I appreciate it!
For a tablet sized device and a stated capture time of a minute or so, it's really quite impressive... Good times ahead of us.
But, to be honest (and disregarding the speed and mobility), the data quality is nothing that gets me really excited.
It would be interesting how the absolute accuracy is regarding larger areas like different rooms combined. The spec sheets states a "measured distance" accuracy of 99.6% at a capturing distance of 1m. But what would happen when scanning a long corridor?!
Regarding the PTX format; are the positions of the single depth images stored within the file?
I am looking forward to more of your testing and how much you can get out of this device. Thanks again!

Re: Testing and Review of the DotProduct Scanner
I'll need some time before I can dig into this a bit deeper but I will advise on what I find.
Keep in mind that what we are dealing with here is an Xtion sensor. So, I can't expect sub millimeter accuracy or super long ranges. Having said that, I must give a lot of credit to the people working on the development of this little system. It has a lot of use for general documentation and holds promise for high accuracy scans when a new sensor makes its way to the market.
I may be able to answer more of your accuracy questions soon. More to follow in the coming days...
