GeoSLAM Zeb-Revo

Post by jcoco3 » Thu Nov 26, 2015 4:20 pm

How has this not been posted about already?

Anyway, I met a couple gents from GeoSLAM(including Neil Pollock an LSF member) at the IAFSM conference this year and they were packing around a new scanner they have been working on that had me intrigued :P

A few things that really caught my attention:
-The entire operation fit in a cute little backpack
-Just walk and scan like the Zeb1
-Large areas scanned extremely fast like Zeb1
-Can be mounted on many different mobile platforms including robots & UAS :ugeek:
-IP-54 rating
-Scans processed in seconds on a surface tablet
-Small scan file size
-Most other specs were similar to Zeb1
-Cloud processing available

I like it :D

As far as I can make out this is the zeb1 with a device that automates the nodding head movement.
I am waiting for the zeb2 (assuming there will be one), hopefully with a much less noisy laser, it could then be a game changer.

'Noise' should be welcomed ;) -If they added some spice to the mix, scanning might be more fun and even bring rain!

I met with Richard Walker (bloke in the video) yesterday while in Ottawa. He had a Zeb-1 with him and we chatted a bit over a drink. I will have to post some of the data from the IAFSM workshop but if you consider how quickly you can document a scene with the Zeb-1, it is really quite remarkable.

To be clear, if you are looking for mm accuracy, then you probably shouldn't read any further. However, if you need a fast way to map out a building, accident scene or forested area, then the Zeb-1 or Revo really make a lot of sense. I can't think of anything that would be faster in that price range and there is hardly a learning curve on that thing!...pretty cool.

Many thanks to Jonathan and Eugene for their comments. In addition to Jonathan's observations on the ZEB REVO it is worth noting that the sensor on the ZEB REVO has been upgraded from the ZEB1's 40hz scanner to 100hz. As you can see from the image below of the IAFSM conference room the data is superb when you take into account a scan time of around 2 minutes. Processing of this data was done locally in around 2 minutes also by utilising Geoslam Desktop Software. Consider this speed and the fact that the REVO can be mounted on almost any mobile platform and you have a very powerful tool

That kind of speed/capture is very interesting to security professionals and I can imagine that the military would see use for this in the field...looking forward to seeing more.

Does Zeb data register in with other scanner data? I think it could be a definite tool for me if it can register with static scans.
