Colin, I think most users are comparing the IStar to using a nodal ninja and not to the onboard camera. I think the istar system competes with nodal ninja workflow more than anything else.colhum1 wrote:I agree Paul and (as you well know ) appreciate the difficulties faced by both companies in getting this far.pburrows145 wrote: I agree it's not what some were hoping for in terms of full automation, but this is step 1, and the feedback from EMEA region users has been good. Looking forward to the next evolution of this feature for sure.
No doubt batching will come along.
iSTAR saves time capturing the image per scan; can this saving be offset against using the onboard camera when taking 50-80 scans and individually colourising...?
Once you start using an iSTAR you quickly forget how long in the field it actually takes capturing images using the onboard camera and there is a quality difference.
If users think that its taking far too long using ColourCloud to colourise individual scans (in the comfort of an office ) and I do appreciate the workflow, you always have the option to try reverting back to the onboard camera

Re: Istar Workflow
Just a quick question: in the video, they make a big deal about setting the time/date in scanner and camera. After that there's no mention about it again. When the files are imported to Cyclone it seems like they are navigating to files in the order which they are listed (which comes from the time stamp). Is the only way to match scans to images is by the order they were collected? Is the software looking at the time stamps at all or just the user?
Ideally it would be best to be able to add a name to the images at capture time that matches the scanner position name. This would also make creating a batch import process much easier.

Re: Istar Workflow
Great suggestion JLarson but one suggested a while back. I'm sure it's coming as at the moment we note it down on a bit of paper (yes paper). High end scanner, high end camera and in the middle is a bit of paper!
Anyone got a nifty way of dealing with this?
Kind Regards
Andy

Re: Istar Workflow
I used to have a simple gps device that you clicked whenever you took a picture to drop a waypoint.
The software then looked not at the time stamps, but at the difference between time stamps to identify a best fit between waypoints and images, then geo-tagged them. A bit like matching two ticker tapes.
It avoided the need to time sync the two devices, but does assume your camera didn't get a flat battery. It did identify outliers, either duff points or where you went out of sync. You then had to manually correct the points, but quite simple to do.
Looking forward to seeing how NCtech and Leica solve the puzzle!

Re: Istar Workflow
Not using gps, just the time deltas from each instrument
Leap frogging may need a little 'user input' though!
