Combined Low Res C10 scans & iSTAR images

Post by colhum1 »

I was called out to an incident at 01:00 hrs the other morning :? Bit chilly....anyway...

It was at a warehouse with a covered docking area and involved a HGV and a couple of forklift trucks.

Lighting was very poor, a few exterior yard lights and 3 of my own lighting rigs.

I used the C10 on the fastest setting which is around 1m 49s (low res, no images) and the iSTAR set to 3HDR, OUTDOOR and with ISO400, which took around 2m 30s.

In total 12 scans and panos in 50 mins.

Back in the office, I converted/exported the scans to e57 and placed each into its own folder with the raw iSTAR pano. I then ran each folder through ColourCloud which took on average 100s per station.

I thought I'd post these screenshots taken after combining low resolution C10 scans (no images) with iSTAR images in NCTech's ColourCloud.

Overall I am pleased with the results and can see the advantage of using low res scans with the iSTAR when time is a factor.

Hi Colin,

Looks really good the quality.
Like to know more about your work flow. We still using Nodal Ninja and I find it hard and very time consuming to map the colour to the cloud.

- Export E57 from Cyclone
- Place E57 and IStar photo in separate Folders
- run Colourcloud (automated)
- Import E57 into Cyclone
- point cloud would be coloured and has photos for TruView background

did I miss anything and is this correct.

How is the automated matching working? Do you see lots of mismatch? what would be the average pixel mismatch?

Thanks Andrej

Andrej,

I've just started to use the istar and so far it's pretty great - color cloud maps the images to the cloud really fast and the automatic matching is near perfect from what I can tell. I used to use the nodal ninja solution and map the colours in Cyclone and there's no way that I'd want to go back!

The only negative is that with the TruViews, the point cloud is coloured, but there are no background images.

You need to allow 1m of space all around iSTAR. Anything closer than 1m will exhibit parallax/stitching errors. But I think that was the same with the nodal ninja solution anyway.

Hi All!
I,m new in this Forum so
just be patient with me!
I need to learn how to map NN5 head+15mm fisheye(full frame) pictures on a C10 laser scan model.
I've many questions about the procedure.
Does anybody have instructions(pdf or anything else) to give me?
1°general question(just to begin): is it possible to map pictures on any scan station and then register them all together or to work one by one station only(single 360°+zenith set of pictures+single scanworld?).
Thank's

Hi Andrej,

My workflow:

-Set up a tripod & level a tribrach
-Use iSTAR (data records onto an SD card) then replace with scanner (speed ? record data onto an external USB)
-Move station and repeat

Office
-Start Cyclone import data from USB
-Open each SW and export as e57 directly into the corresponding iSTAR folder(s) while (still on SD card)
-Drag individual folders or all in one go (ColourCloud can handle hundreds) into ColourCloud
-Choose your options and process
-Import the new iSTAR.e57 file back into Cyclone
-Register

You asked about pixel mis-match, as James mentions, I haven't noticed any.
The higher resolution you scan at, the better the coloured point cloud looks.
You have to remember that if you need / want measurements then a denser point cloud is always going to be better but will take longer ie. med res scan with the C10 about 5mins per station, so you need to work out the trade off in quality v time.

James is correct about the images in the Truviews but remember as a trade off, iSTAR still produces excellent panos that can supplement your data, at the same time.

Hi

thanks for this. I was actually hoping that the new created E57 will import the photos to cyclone and when could be used for TruView. But it seams like with all other software I can't get the photos included. Z&F does it but you loose it using cyclone, Faro has it but again you loose it using cyclone.

The problem is our main registration tool is Cyclone and our main deliverable is ReCap. But to get the photos into the Bubble view you need to use FLS files or Z&F file which mean they have to be registered in their software.

Thanks

Very nice Colin. Really adds another dimension to night scans.
