That's interesting to know, mesh painting can be an lot of fun.
I do think that Z-Brush has got to be one of the best 3D modelling, meshing and painting programs on the market. I have been using it for years and can model just about any organic or mechanical object, it really is amazing.

If you could get point clouds into Z-Brush it would be even better.

Re: MeshLab
Matt, I would agree that MeshLab is hit and miss. It has a lot of potential and some really cool tools and I think there are a lot of people using it for research or on smaller projects without so many points.Matt Young wrote:I know it's free and I know that others have had great success with it, but it's never worked for me! Personally I think you get what you pay for and would go with something like 3D Reshaper or Geomagic instead.
Personally, I have had a lot more success with CloudCompare where I use their implementation of poisson reconstruction. On my last project, I meshed a surface and compared it to someone else who was using Geomagic. I can tell you that the results were comparable (if not better with CloudCompare).
When using CloudCompare, you might get a "not responding" message, but I just let it cook and it has come through every time. Start small in your settings, then slowly increase to get what you want.

Re: MeshLab
try to follow this tutorial http://meshlabstuff.blogspot.cz/2009/09 ... louds.htmlMatt Young wrote:Okay, I installed the 1.3.0 version with no problems.
Only problem I do have is that it's very unstable to use. I can get an xyz file in as a test and can see the points. I try to run meshing (Poisson reconstruction) and it crashes every time, It's only five thousand points. I did try a .pts file but Meshlab doesn't seem to like a Leica .pts file and it's probably something to do with the header in the file. Might try .ptx and see if that is any better.

I just want to get some meshes created and then play with them in Z-Brush.
First you have to subsample-unify the points and then create normals. After that poisson should work. Good luck!

Re: MeshLab
Thanks for the info and tutorial - will definitely try again with this at some point.
If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

Re: MeshLab
I've just downloaded and tested V1.3.3 64 bit.
Very pleasantly surprised. It imports colour PTX files beautifully.
It seems far more stable than it used to be.
Regards,
Mike.
