You might also want to look at the inspection map capabilities in Trimble RealWorks.

Okay - did manage to get a .pts file in but tried meshing and it just stopped at 50% and got no further. Will try it again when I have time - still a good bit of software for free anyway.
If you don't see that there is nothing, then you are kidding yourself.

I found the mesh creation tools are limited for a TLS cloud. GOM scanners create a much less dispersed mesh, and the software is obviously tailored to this cloud quality...
On the other hand it has some powerful mesh handling, including holes and bridge healing, and a great decimation. You can select and control the maximum target mesh deviation in place of the target point numbers.
If you have the (meshed) cloud and a reference geometry you can use it for its main purpose, that's quality inspection... great stuff here.

Regarding GOM Inspect, so far I have found that I need to keep the point cloud segments nominally less than 700,000 points, otherwise it seems to slow down dramatically(perhaps just my old computer). Having said that, anything below that threshold processes very quickly, and the live preview whilst you adjust parameters is very helpful, as shown below.
I am currently using Cloud Compare to prepare the point cloud prior to import into GOM, using mainly the segmentation, sub-sampling and smoothing tools therein.

You wont be able to do this in Amberg TMS Office if you only have the light version (for profile analysis). In case he wants to do a full analysis of the scandata including a colormap evaluation, he should upgrade to the full TMS Tunnelscan licence.
