Drone Technology

Post by dsauceda33 »

Hello All,

I'm trying to do some research on drone technology and get some feedback from people that are doing this type of scanning.

Does it use it's own proprietary software?
Can you import this data into Cyclone directly, or do you have to convert the data?
Is there a certain software that can be recommended for data processing?
How dense is the data, can I create contours and topographical maps?
How big are the files?

I'm just looking to get some knowledge in this field and any information will be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Those are some big questions.

Did you make it to SPAR, was in your backyard...

Depends on what type of equipment you are using to capture data. If it's just photos and you're using photogrammetry the point clouds are generally not too dense, and don't take all that much data.

Aeryon photos and images and las is the folder with the point cloud generated from the photogrammetry from the Photoscan Aeryon Unscaled

Hello David,

There are for now few drone that uses proprietary software, you can get the necessary data (mostly GPS, IMU and photos data) directly out. But it seems that this will soon be over.
If you want to import the data in Cyclone, I guess you mean point cloud data, then you have to recreate the point cloud throught photogrammetry - SFM - Computer Vision, therefore use another program for this (I can give you some hint on which one to use if needed).

The point cloud data quality and density depends mainly on your flight planning, your sensor quality, the capture quality and the reconstruction quality. Usually, you can recreate topographical maps, knowing that for levelling you will not get Z under the grass (if using a passive sensor) or other elements. Contours are also very easily extracted.

If you want to take a look directly at an (old) example of point cloud capture, please take a look here (real time - no plugin) :
https://www.geovast3d.com/flyvast/src/w ... riere.html

The size for this one is 1 Go (as .fly - compressed), which correspond approx. to 5 Go in .las.

Hi David
We have been carrying out aerial surveys for a number of years now, using high and lower quality equipment (depends on budget). We have done some extensive comparative work with our local University with very good results. I have nearly finished an article on a very controlled survey area, a comparison between scan data(Leica c10) and aerial survey data, will post as soon as its done, here is an example of a project we have done recently, no figures here, just an animation, http://www.dtm-tech.co.uk/uav-monitorin ... #more-1949
