I have used two different ways of showing tank deformation.
1. sectioning by distance to a design cylinder in cyclone and then colour the result
2. export the data, then unrolling the data and using DTM colouring in CAD to visual the deformation.
There are other software like Geomagic which do the some work.

I have written a little TML program which runs in Terramodel to unroll a cylinder and roll it back. At the time this was the CAD program I was able to write code very quick. The only limitation is the amount of points it can load and work with which is 20mil however as I was working on comparing two scan to each over I had to limited to 7mil points for each cylinder. In Terramodel I was able to unroll it and create a new surface which was the difference of both and could then create different colour maps using Terramodel and/or AutoCAD.
