I ran into a man today when I was having my trailer inspected. He saw my truck (has our logo) and started telling me they have a scanner they used to scan the Columbia when it broke up in re-entry. He said it was a white light scanner and I believe he said the make was a "Dome" (or something similar). I did a search for Dome scanners and found nothing. I looked up white light scanners and the article I read indicated they have a very high level of precision for measuring smaller objects. He offered to sell it to me several times.
Has anyone heard of Dome? I'm really not considering buying it (if it was used on the Columbia then it's at least 14 years old) but it made me curious.
Bill

Re: Dome White Light Scanners
I bet that's it. Based on what the company does and how it described their use, it would fit.
Thank you.
Thank you.

Check out the PolyWorks Connection here. Used to analyse the scan data from a scanner mounted on the arm, for damage before re entry.

Re: Dome White Light Scanners
Hi Bill, I remember seeing something like this a long long time ago, it consisted of a dome with loads of flash bulbs inside. The bulbs would go off in sequence and a camera would record the various images of whatever was inside the dome, the software would analyse the shadows in each of the images to create depth and therefore a 3d map of the object, I don't think it took off though!! There was a couple of papers published on it but I can't think who did the research.
Let us know if you find out anymore.

It's not really a white light scanner and probably wouldn't have been used to scan something like the Columbia debris, but it is used a lot for creating digital humans. e.g.:

Thanks Jed, the ones we saw were proper cornflake box and sticky back plastic jobs! Looks like they did take off then!
