With the recent launch of the new Oculus Rift I think many of us will start to dig into the VR more deeply.
For what I know about stereoscopic visualization, to manage a 3D view we should need to render two different videos, taken from separate POV (I think 60 mm gap beetwen them), one in each Oculus's screen.
This could be done in two ways:
1) Using a software that generate a video (partial or 360°) that can be viewed with Oculus without interaction.
2) Visualizing the point cloud directly in the Oculus, with a sort of real time processing that render two frame, each one slightly away from the POV. In this case the user could decide what to see and from where (exactly as we all do with Recap, Cyclone, Scene etc.), but in 3D and with a lot more interesting user experience.
I know that Digital Surveys are working with VR developing something for point clouds.
Do you know any other company, software or future project that is going to provide a feature like the second one?
Anything like what you can see in this video:

I believe you can do this in 3ds max.

Re: Pointclouds viewer and Oculus Rift
This isn't directly responsive to your post and query, but I believe it does go hand in hand. The guys at Sketchfab have implemented VR compatibility that allows you to view any of their models with Google cardboard VR or compatible viewers.

My understanding is that they are implementing some point cloud capability. Thus, it may be possible now (or will be soon possible) to view your point clouds in true stereoscopic views via solutions like Sketchfab.

The line at CES 2016 was too long to waste the time.
But this was interesting

Actually this is interesting and by the way it's what I'm looking for, except they show only their 3D models that, compared to a pointcloud, it's way lighter.vislaw wrote:This isn't directly responsive to your post and query, but I believe it does go hand in hand. Only, I haven't found info on how they render the two side by side frame. Are them the same frame duplicated? or two different frames generated from two separate point of view (as it should be)?
One of the companies that have developed the pointcloud viewers in this list, should push on VR and give us the possibility to show pointclouds in 3D with an headset.

Re: Pointclouds viewer and Oculus Rift
It is a true stereoscopic render. Indeed, their system necessarily favors low polygon meshes.
If you search a bit you can find a lot of promising stuff in development. For instance:
